Broken Promises: Uri-II Project Oustees Still Await Jobs as Outsiders Benefit

Uri, Baramulla – July 23:
More than a decade after sacrificing their ancestral lands for the Uri-II hydroelectric project, hundreds of genuine land oustees from several villages in the Uri sector are still waiting for the employment opportunities they were promised. The residents accuse the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) of violating its own policy, which clearly prioritizes employment for local displaced families.

Villagers from Salamabad, Gingle, Bandi, and other affected areas allege that instead of providing jobs to those who gave up their land and homes, the corporation has selectively distributed employment benefits among a few influential families. Meanwhile, many locals with legitimate claims remain sidelined.

“We gave up everything in the name of national development—our land, our livelihood, and even our peace—but the promised jobs never came,” said Bashir Ahmad, a resident of Salamabad whose family was displaced during the construction of the project.

and ensure accountability. If their voices continue to be ignored, they warn that they may intensify their agitation in the coming days.
