JOIN THE PROTEST PROGRAMMES/DEMONSTRATIONS ON 8TH & 9TH AUGUST — LET THE WHOLE OF BENGAL RISE FOR JUSTICE!

It has been 11 months since that cursed night of August 9, 2024— the night our colleague Abhaya fell victim to brutal sexual violence and murder. Since then, we’ve witnessed the farcical attempt to pass off her killing as a “suicide,” the ruling party-backed takeover of campus spaces, the rushed cremation, and a deeply compromised investigation — full of deliberate obstacles, silences, and sabotage.

One year is nearing its end, and yet:

There is no supplementary chargesheet.

No mention of the masterminds behind the “larger conspiracy”.

The perpetrators walk free, emboldened.

The system looks the other way.

In this climate of betrayal, the West Bengal Junior Doctors' Front announces three protest programmes, aiming to reach every corner — from city to village, from Kolkata to the most remote campuses.

August 8, Friday

Torch Rally — from College Square to Shyambazar

We will take to the streets at the exact hour the horrific assault on Abhaya took place.
Upon reaching Shyambazar, our second programme shall ensue.

August 8 (midnight) to August 9 (dawn)
Sit-in and Overnight Protest at Shyambazar Crossing

We shall stay awake the entire night, during the very hours that the chargesheet marks as the time of crime. We shall stay awake because Abhaya was robbed of her life on this very night one year back, and we have been robbed of our peace ever since. We shall stay awake together, emboldening each other, and fighting again through our songs, poetry, speeches, tears, banners, and resistance. The streets and walls of Kolkata will speak again.
Let us paint the city with Graffiti and street paintings again — the very ones the administration tried to erase. Let the sound of our slogans re-emerge, and resonate through every corner of Bengal.
Let us write again. Paint again. Cry out in protest again.
It is time to reclaim this fight, and reinforce our movement for justice.

This gathering is not just to remember Abhaya — it is a defiant stand against r**e culture, against threats and intimidation, and against the ruling party–enabled criminal takeover of our campuses.

A Special Request:
If you are unable to join the Kolkata events, we urge you to organise parallel protests in your own campuses, hospitals, neighbourhoods, or any space of resistance — during these three time slots.

Torch or candle marches, overnight sit-ins, wall art, graffiti, or slogan-writing — let the cries for justice resound in every street, alley, and wall where they once tried to silence us.

And if you’re organising something locally — do message or email us. It helps us coordinate and support.

This fight belongs to all of us.
WBJDF calls on everyone — every citizen who believes in democracy, every student collective, activist group, and healthcare worker — to stand with us in these programmes.

Our weapon against forgetfulness — is memory.
