India to 359 for 3 at stumps on the opening day of the first Test against England here on Friday.

Jaiswal (101) brought up his fifth Test hundred right before tea, reaching the milestone in 144 balls with 16 fours and a six.

Gill (127 not out), meanwhile, reached his century in the final session of the day, marking a memorable start to his captaincy tenure.

With the ton, Gill joins an elite group of Indians -- Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, and Virat Kohli -- who scored centuries in their first Test as captain.

Jaiswal and Gill stitched together a crucial 129-run stand for the third wicket after India lost KL Rahul (42) and debutant B Sai Sudharsan (0) in quick succession just before the lunch break.

Vice-captain Rishabh Pant was batting on 65, giving Gill company when stumps were called.

For England, skipper Ben Stokes (2/43) took two wickets.

Brief Scores: India: 359 for 3 in 85 overs (Yashasvi Jaiswal 101, Shubman Gill 127 not out, Rishabh Pant 65 not out; Ben Stokes 2/43, Brydon Carse 1/70).

Belagavi: Maharashtra government has reorganised the 18-member high power committee regarding the Karnataka-Maharashtra boundary dispute with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis as its chairman on Thursday.

The committee will decide on the measures to be taken regarding the boundary row and the next course of action on behalf of the government.

Karnataka is yet to depute a minister for overseeing the legal proceedings in the Supreme Court regarding which Maharashtra filed a suit in 2004.

The neighbouring state has been taking measures to protect its interests and the high power committee too has been reorganised.

A notification by Maharashtra government said that the committee had been first formed on May 2, 2000. It was reorganised on November 22, 2022 and December 7, 2024.

The committee is headed by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Its members are Deputy Chief Ministers Ekanath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, MP Sharad Pawar, MP Narayan Rane, Prithviraj Chavan, Higher Education and Boundary Dispute Coordination Minister Chandrakant Paitl, Tourism and Boundary Dispute Coordination Minister Shambhuraj Desai, Health Minister Prakash Abitkar, MLAs Jayant Patil, Suresh Khade, Sudhir Gadgil, Sachin Shetty, Rohit Patil, State Planning Board Working President Rajesh Kshirsagar, Prakash Awade and Leader of Opposition in Legislative Assembly and Leader of Opposition in Legislative Council.

Belagavi District Kannada Organisations Action Committee President Ashok Chandargi said, we have been urging Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to depute a minister for overseeing the suit filed by Maharashtra in the apex court regarding the Karnataka-Maharashtra boundary dispute, but have not seen any progress. We want the government to take the issue seriously to protect interests of the state.

Leader of Opposition in Karnataka Assembly R Ashok mocked Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who is known to champion the cause of the 'Ahinda' (a bloc of minorities, backward classes and dalit voters) and said, "After granting 4 per cent reservation for Muslims in government contract works, it is now trying to increase the minority reservation in housing schemes from 10 to 15 per cent.

Has the 'Hinda' in 'Ahinda' vanished? Is this social justice? The Congress party thrives on vote-bank politics, and finds new ways to continue its minority appeasement policies."

"Just like Nehru and Jinnah partitioned India for selfish reasons, today, the anti-national CM Siddaramaiah and DCM DK Shivakumar are attempting to divide society in Karnataka on religious lines," alleged Ashok.

BJP MLA V Sunil Kumar took a dig at the Congress party and said the party had distorted the Constitution by imposing Emergency in the past and now, by giving religion-based reservation to Muslims, it was working against the Constitution and Dr Ambedkar's ideals.

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India), June 19 (ANI): Karnataka Deputy Chief MinisterDK Shivakumar on Thursday announced an increase in the housing quota for minorities in urban areas, raising it from 10% to 15%.

"A lot of flats built by the Housing Department in urban areas have not been occupied. The minorities have shown interest in moving to those flats. Hence, we are increasing their quota in urban housing from 10% to 15%," the DCM said while speaking to reporters at Vidhana Soudha.
"In some of the urban areas, the poor among the minorities are 20-30%. There was a proposal to increase the quota for the minorities, and the others are not showing keen interest in the Housing Department's flats. There are many empty flats years after construction, hence we have decided to increase the reservation," he added.

"Many flats have been constructed by the Housing Department, but a lot of them are empty. The minorities have come forward to go there, and hence the government has taken a decision in this regard.
In response to inquiries regarding the Bharatiya Janata Party's criticism of the move as appeasement politics, he said, "Let them say whatever they want, we are only helping the poor. What should the government do when no one is applying for these flats? The Law Minister will explain the modalities of this.
