In 2022, a man woke up alone in the Gulf of Mexico, miles from the cruise ship he had been aboard, with nothing but open water surrounding him.
Just hours earlier, he had been celebrating after winning a free drink in an air-guitar contest aboard the cruise. That was his last memory before everything went blank.
When he regained consciousness, the ship was gone.
For approximately 18 hours, he treaded water in the open Gulf, fighting exhaustion while hoping someone would spot him. Then two swarms of jellyfish stung his arms and legs, adding another painful danger to an already desperate struggle.
Still, he kept himself afloat.
After 18 hours alone at sea, he was finally spotted and rescued.
A free drink from an air-guitar contest became the last ordinary memory before an unexpected fall overboard turned a cruise vacation into an extraordinary survival story.
