Teen Killed, Another Critically Injured in Williamsburg Bridge Subway Surfing Tragedy**
NEW YORK A 14-year-old boy is dead and an 18-year-old man remains in critical condition following a dangerous "subway surfing" incident near the Williamsburg Bridge on the Lower East Side.
The incident occurred just before 6:00 p.m. on Monday near Delancey and Lewis Streets. According to authorities, the 14-year-old fell from a train, plunging the equivalent of six to seven stories to the ground, which resulted in his death. The 18-year-old fell onto the subway tracks during the incident and is currently being treated for critical injuries.
First responders arrived at the scene to find both individuals unconscious and unresponsive before transporting them to the hospital, where the younger teen was pronounced dead.
Subway surfing—the act of climbing onto the outside or top of moving trains—has claimed the lives of several teenagers in recent years. In response to this dangerous trend, the MTA has launched a campaign titled "Ride Inside, Stay Alive," which includes on-train announcements urging passengers to remain inside the cars.
Officials have described the death as a "preventable tragedy" and have reiterated warnings regarding the lethal risks associated with the activity. The identity of the deceased teenager has not yet been released as the investigation continues.
