Bhatkal: The state government has taken a significant step by approving the elevation of Bhatkal, a historic and rapidly developing city in Uttara Kannada district, to the status of a Municipal Council (Nagar Sabha). This decision was made during today’s cabinet meeting.

U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order imposing an additional 25% tariff on Indian imports, the White House announced on Wednesday. This move raises the total tariff burden on Indian goods to 50%, following a previous 25% tariff imposed in July, along with other unspecified penalties.

The latest escalation stems from Trump’s repeated accusations that India is continuing to purchase Russian oil and, in his words, “indirectly supporting Russia’s war in Ukraine.” The administration has framed the tariffs as a punitive measure against what it calls “non-cooperation” with U.S. foreign policy efforts.

India, in a firm response issued Monday, rejected the allegations and slammed the U.S. for what it described as “unjustified and unreasonable” targeting over its energy trade decisions. Indian officials pointed out that it was the United States itself that previously encouraged nations, including India, to buy Russian oil in order to stabilise global energy markets following the Ukraine war.

While the White House has not yet detailed which sectors will be affected by the expanded tariff, trade experts warn the move could have serious implications for key Indian exports, including pharmaceuticals, textiles, and IT hardware.

Diplomatic tensions between New Delhi and Washington are expected to rise further, as India evaluates possible retaliatory measures or takes the matter to the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Pune | August 5, 2025 — The Bombay High Court on Tuesday directed the Pune Police Commissioner to initiate strict action against Shashikant Chavan, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Khadak Police Station, for refusing to register an FIR related to an alleged communal assault.

The case involves an incident from April 2025 in Pune’s Bhawani Peth area, where two brothers, Karan and Harsh Keswani, reportedly got into an altercation with Shoaib Umar Syed after a dispute over honking. The confrontation allegedly escalated into a physical fight, leaving Harsh Keswani seriously injured.

However, Shoaib Syed and his brother claimed that they were the actual victims of a communal attack and were assaulted based on their religious identity. They alleged that when they approached the Khadak Police Station to file a complaint, SHO Chavan refused to register their FIR, citing that an attempt to murder case had already been filed against them by the Keswani brothers.

Congress MP and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday linked the ongoing US tariff threats against India with the Adani Group’s legal troubles in the United States, claiming Prime Minister Narendra Modi is constrained in responding due to the investigation.

For the first time, Gandhi connected the US tariff issue with the Adani case, despite there being no direct official link between the two matters.

“India, please understand: The reason PM Modi cannot stand up to President Trump despite his repeated threats is the ongoing U.S. investigation into Adani. One threat is to expose the financial links between Modi, Adani, and Russian oil deals. Modi’s hands are tied,” Gandhi wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

The Adani Group is currently under scrutiny in the US over allegations of bribery to secure solar energy contracts, with the US Securities and Exchange Commission claiming that American investors were not informed of these alleged payments. The Adani Group has denied all accusations.

Gandhi’s statement comes days after a heated parliamentary debate on Operation Sindoor, during which the Wayanad MP and other opposition leaders criticized PM Modi for allegedly remaining silent on US claims about brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. However, PM Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar refuted these claims, stating that no foreign leader requested India to stop the conflict.

A senior Congress leader indicated that Gandhi’s move to link the US tariff threats with the Adani investigation signals a strategic effort to intensify pressure on the government in the coming days.

“Along with the SIR issue, the tariff threat is a major concern for us. Gandhi’s tweet also comes ahead of a dinner he is hosting for INDIA group leaders, aiming to unify the opposition on these matters,” the leader said.

Mumbai, August 2025 — The recent appointment of Advocate Arati Arun Sathe as a judge of the Bombay High Court has sparked a political controversy, following revelations that she had previously served as an official spokesperson for the Maharashtra BJP.

The Supreme Court of India approved the appointments of Ajit Bhagwantrao Kadehankar, Arati Arun Sathe, and Sushil Manohar Ghodeswar as judges of the Bombay High Court during a meeting held on July 28, 2025.

However, Sathe’s political background has drawn sharp criticism from opposition leaders, who have raised concerns about judicial impartiality and demanded that the appointment be reconsidered.

Rohit Pawar, MLA and General Secretary of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP-SP), shared evidence on social media showing Sathe’s prior role as Maharashtra BJP spokesperson, posting a screenshot from the party’s official letterhead signed by Sathe herself.

Pawar condemned the appointment, stating:
“The appointment of a person who advocates publicly for the ruling party as a High Court judge is a severe blow to democracy and the impartiality of the judiciary. Gautam Adani has stepped down as the executive chairman of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd. (APSEZ) effective August 5, 2025. With this change, he will no longer be counted as a key manager in the company.

At the same time, Manish Kejriwal was appointed as a new independent director for an initial term of three years. His appointment will be finalized after approval from the company’s shareholders, expected within three months.

Adani Ports also announced a 21% increase in quarterly revenue, helped by strong growth in logistics and marine services. Gautam Adani, the founder of Adani Group, has built the company into a major business with interests in resources, logistics, and energy. APSEZ is India’s largest private port operator, managing 15 ports across the country and handling about 28% of India’s total port cargo.

ANKARA – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has welcomed the United Kingdom’s announcement that it will recognize Palestine as a sovereign state,
provided Israel takes concrete steps to secure peace and improve conditions in Gaza. In a phone call on Monday, Erdogan congratulated new UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and stressed the urgent need for coordinated international action to end
the violence in the region and advance the two-state solution.

The conversation comes after Starmer revealed the UK’s intention to formally recognize Palestinian statehood at the United Nations General Assembly this
September—if Israel agrees to a ceasefire, allows more humanitarian aid into Gaza, and reins in settlement expansion and annexation in the West Bank.

President Erdogan applauded the move as a significant step for justice and regional stability, emphasizing that “the humanitarian situation in Gaza has reached a critical point.” He urged countries not to be content with expressions of concern, but to pursue concrete diplomacy and mediation to stop the bloodshed.

Satya Pal Malik, the former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, passed away on Tuesday after a long illness. He was 79. Malik was known for playing a key role
during a crucial period in Kashmir’s history, as he was the Governor from August 2018 to October 2019.

During his time in office, the central government revoked Article 370, removing the state’s special status and turning Jammu and Kashmir into
two union territories.

After his role in Jammu and Kashmir, Malik also served as Governor in Bihar, Goa, and Meghalaya. In recent years, he became well known for criticizing the
government, especially regarding the 2019 Pulwama attack, where he claimed there were security and intelligence failures. He also alleged that he had refused bribes while serving as Governor.

Malik’s outspoken views made him a prominent and sometimes controversial figure in Indian politics.

CHITRADURGA: A severe accident took place near the bus stand in Chitradurga when an autorickshaw got trapped and crushed between two buses.

According to reports and CCTV footage, there was slow-moving traffic on the road when a speeding private bus hit the autorickshaw from behind. This impact forced the autorickshaw into a collision with a bus moving ahead, crushing it between the two.
Five people, including the autorickshaw driver, suffered serious injuries in the crash.

They were immediately rushed to the government district hospital in Chitradurga for treatment. Authorities registered a case at the city traffic police station and have started investigating the circumstances behind the accident.

The accident highlights the dangers of speeding and negligent driving in busy traffic conditions.
