India is likely to face a hotter-than-usual summer this year, with the number of heatwave days between March and May projected to be higher than the seasonal norm, the weather department said on Saturday. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, director-general of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), noted that minimum temperatures in March, the opening month of the summer season, are expected to stay above average across much of the country.

More than 500 farmers gathered near the Parambikulam Aliyar Project (PAP) office in Pongalur, Tiruppur district, on March 1, demanding that the State government announce a definite timeline for implementing the Anamalaiyaru–Nallaru project.

The demonstration was organised by the Tamil Nadu Farmers’ Association. Eswaran, the association’s Tiruppur district secretary, said the project had remained pending for several decades and urged that it be taken up without further delay once the elections conclude, The Hindu reported.

“We want whichever party forms the government after the elections to declare a clear implementation timeline for the project,” he said.

Every year on March 3, World Wildlife Day puts the spotlight on the planet’s wildlife and the role it plays in keeping ecosystems and human societies functioning. The day was established by the United Nations in 2013 to mark the anniversary of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), a global agreement aimed at preventing wildlife trade from driving species toward extinction.

But the observance is not just symbolic. Scientists say biodiversity loss is accelerating, and the disappearance of even a single species can set off changes that spread far beyond its habitat.

Tribal students from Andhra Pradesh’s Vizianagaram district marched along a damaged and dug-up pathway last week, calling for the construction of a proper road linking their remote villages to the nearest school.

Carrying photographs of Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan around their necks, the students walked across the severely deteriorated stretch to highlight their daily hardships, NDTV reported. “We struggle every day, travelling nearly 12 kilometres through hilly terrain just to reach school. Please build a road for us. We want to study,” they appealed.

Nine members of the India Youth Congress (IYC) secured bail from a Delhi court on Sunday in connection with a ‘shirtless’ protest staged during the India AI Impact Summit on February 20, while the bail plea of another accused was rejected.

Duty Magistrate Ravi granted relief to nine accused persons, directing them to furnish bail bonds of Rs. 25,000 each with one surety. The bonds are scheduled to be submitted on Monday. Those granted bail include Krishna Hari, Kundan Yadav, Narsimha Yadav, Ajay Singh, Saurabh, Arbaz Khan, Ajay Kumar Vimal, Raja Gujar, and Jitendra Yadav.

During the hearing, Delhi Police opposed the bail applications, arguing that the protest had been intentionally carried out at the summit venue rather than at officially permitted demonstration sites such as Jantar Mantar. Police told the court that the protesters wore shirts displaying the message: “India compromised with America”.

The United States military reportedly relied on Claude, the artificial intelligence model developed by Anthropic, during its strikes on Iran, even though President Donald Trump had ordered federal agencies to cut ties with the company only hours earlier.

Reports by the Wall Street Journal and Axios said the AI system was used during the large-scale joint US-Israel bombardment that began on Saturday. The episode highlights how deeply artificial intelligence tools are already integrated into military operations, making an immediate disengagement difficult despite political directives.

According to the reports, US military command used Claude for intelligence analysis, target identification and battlefield simulation exercises intended to support operational planning.

Experts Call Budget 2026 a Turning Point for India’s Urban Economy

The Union Budget 2026–27 has signalled a structural pivot in India’s urban development strategy, prioritising fiscal de-risking and high-speed connectivity to decentralise economic growth. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s announcement of a ₹12.2 lakh crore capital expenditure outlay for the upcoming fiscal year, coupled with a new Infrastructure Risk Guarantee Fund, aims to unlock private investment and address the chronic liquidity issues plaguing the construction sector.

Central to this year’s fiscal roadmap is the development of City Economic Regions (CERs), with an allocation of ₹5,000 crore per city over the next five years. This move is designed to transform Tier-II cities into self-sustaining hubs, reducing the burden on over-leveraged Tier-I metros.

A new report from the Harvard Business Review has upended the popular narrative that Generation Z views Generative AI as a seamless digital companion. Instead, the research reveals a cohort that uses the technology with cold pragmatism while harbouring significant fears that the tools are making them "lazier" and "less intelligent."

The article, "How Gen Z Uses Gen AI—and Why It Worries Them," is based on a survey of nearly 2,500 U.S. adults between the ages of 18 and 28. Led by a team including University of Pennsylvania psychologist Angela Duckworth and Lyle Ungar, the study highlights a "complicated, often defiant" relationship between young workers and AI.

The Thomson Reuters Foundation (TRF) plans to close most of its news operation next month, including Context News, Sources told The Baron. Around a dozen journalists working for Context News were informed of the move during a staff meeting last week by TRF chief executive Antonio Zappulla. Seven of the journalists are based in overseas bureaux, with the remainder in London. Around eight contractors also work with Context. TRF is the charitable arm of Thomson Reuters.

According to the sources, most journalists will be made redundant or redeployed where possible within other parts of the Foundation or Reuters News. A small group of three journalists will continue until the end of 2027 on a donor-funded project.

The sources said that while the Foundation continues to receive substantial funding from Thomson Reuters, donor support for the news operation has gradually declined. Context News had been contracting for some time despite investment in a new website, expanded social media output and a rebranding exercise.

A spokesperson for the Foundation confirmed that a “strategic reorganisation” had been proposed to certain teams and roles but declined to comment further while consultations with staff are under way.
