The image provides a comprehensive visual guide to common transmission layouts found in modern and classic vehicles. Understanding these patterns is essential for mastering vehicle control and ensuring mechanical longevity.

1. Manual Transmission Gear Patterns (H-Pattern)
Manual transmissions require the driver to physically move the gear stick into specific slots. Most follow an "H-pattern" design.

Manual 5 Speeds: This is the standard layout for many older or economy cars.

Gears 1, 3, and 5 are located at the top.

Gears 2, 4, and Reverse (R) are at the bottom.

Neutral is the central horizontal line.

Manual 6 Speeds: Common in performance and modern long-distance vehicles.

To accommodate the extra gear, Reverse (R) is often moved to the far left (next to 1st) and may require a "pull-up" ring or "push-down" lockout to engage, preventing accidental shifts while driving.

Manual 5 Speeds (alt): A variation where Reverse is located to the far right, below 5th gear. This is common in certain European and Japanese manufacturers.

2. Automatic Transmission Shifter Layouts
Automatic shifters usually follow the PRND (Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive) sequence, but the physical gate or functionality can vary.

Automatic PRND: The most basic linear or "staircase" (gate) shifter.

P (Park): Locks the transmission.

R (Reverse): For backing up.

N (Neutral): Disconnects the engine from the wheels.

D (Drive): For normal forward moving.

S (Sport) or 5: Often allows the car to hold gears longer for better acceleration.

Automatic Sequential: Also known as "Manumatic" or "Tiptronic."

While in Drive, the driver can push the stick into a separate side-channel (marked +/-).

Pushing + upshifts and - downshifts, giving the driver manual control without a clutch pedal.

Automatic PRND-LD: * Includes L (Low) and D (Drive). Low gear is used for maximum engine braking or heavy towing, preventing the car from shifting into higher gears on steep descents.

Automatic with Overdrive (OD):

Features a specific button or setting for Overdrive.

Overdrive allows the engine to run at lower RPMs during high-speed cruising, which improves fuel efficiency and reduces engine wear.

3. Symbols and Components
The bottom section of the image highlights the core identifiers used in automotive interiors:

"M" and "A" Icons: These are typically found on dashboards or mode selectors to indicate whether the car is in Manual or Automatic mode.

H-Pattern Shift Symbol: The universal icon representing a manual gearbox.

The Gear Lever: A 3D representation of the physical tool used by the driver. The "boot" (the leather cover at the base) allows for the necessary range of motion while keeping dust out of the shifting mechanism.

Key Takeaways for Drivers
Manual: Requires precise timing between the clutch pedal and the gear lever.

Automatic: Simplifies driving but offers different modes (Sequential/Low) for specific terrain or performance needs.

Safety: Always ensure the vehicle is in P (Park) or Neutral with the Handbrake engaged before starting the engine.
