VINESH PHOGAT ACCUSES WFI CHIEF OF SEXUAL HARASSMENT, SAYS ‘DON’T KNOW IF I WILL BE ALIVE’

India’s most-decorated women wrestlers, Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik, on Wednesday accused BJP MP and Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh of sexual harassment.

Addressing the media on behalf of the women wrestlers allegedly exploited – the wrestlers staged a dharna at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi – Vinesh Phogat, the country’s only double World Championship medallist, said, “Women wrestlers have been sexually harassed at national camps by coaches and also the WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan. Some of the coaches appointed at national camps have been sexually harassing women wrestlers for years. The WFI president is also involved in sexual harassment.”

Sharing the dais with Vinesh and endorsing the allegations, India’s lone Olympic medallist Sakshi Malik said, “We have just come to save them. We are fighting for them. When the time comes, we will speak up. We will give the names of those who have been exploited to whoever is doing the probe.”

Following the accusations, Singh told the media: “Is anyone saying that the WFI has sexually harassed a wrestler? Only Vinesh has said it. Has anyone come forward and said that they personally have been sexually harassed? Even if one wrestler comes forward and says that she has been sexually harassed, that day I can be hanged.”

Vinesh gave details of the ways in which national and international wrestlers were allegedly exploited by the WFI chief and coaches. “This exploitation is happening every day. Why does the camp happen in Lucknow? We have written to the PM and the Sports Minister … The reason it’s happening over there is because he has a house there and so it’s easy to exploit the girls. They trouble us too much. They get into our personal lives and relationships. They want to know everything,” she said.

VIRAT KOHLI’S 10TH PLAYER OF THE SERIES IN HIS GLITTERING CAREER

Interestingly, the 34-year-old has been adjudged the Player of the Series for the 10th time in his glittering career. Kohli had an interesting response when he was asked about his special feat. “I have no idea (about the Player of the Series awards he has won). For me, it's just a byproduct of the intent I have, mindset that I play with. Mindset is always to help the team win, bat for as long as possible and if you do that, you end up making a difference. I have always played for the right reasons, help the team as much as possible. It is just intent, playing for the right reasons,” Kohli told Murali Kartik at the post-match presentation ceremony.

Kohli played an unbeaten knock of 166 off 110 balls to finish the series as the leading run-getter. Kohli, who has 12,754 runs in ODIs, has become the fifth-highest run-scorer in the 50-over format. The batting maestro also holds the record of smashing the most number of centuries (20) at home. The 34-year-old shattered Sachin Tendulkar's world record to achieve the special feat in the 3rd ODI against Sri Lanka.

“Ever since I came back from the long break, I have been feeling good. I don't have that desperation to get to a milestone. I am just enjoying my batting, being in a space where I can relax. Today as well, I was just happy to be out there batting. I am in a nice space right now and want this to continue. Shami has always been there for us but the way Siraj has come up has been outstanding. He has taken the maximum number of wickets in the powerplay, which was an issue for us early. He is always making the batters think, which is a great sign for us going into the World Cup,” Kohli added.

BIRSA MUNDA STADIUM IS WORLD’S LARGEST HOCKEY STADIUM: FIH PRESIDENT

Putting aside all doubts and burying all controversies, International Hockey Federation (FIH) President Tayyab Ikram has confirmed that Birsa Munda Stadium in Odisha’s Rourkela city is the largest stadium for hockey in the world in terms of seating capacity.

“No other hockey stadium in the world except Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium in Rourkela has 21,800 seating capacity,” said Ikram at a presser today.

Seating capacity at Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium had been raised from 20,000 to 21,800, he added. “You don’t have this ‘seating’ capacity anywhere in the world. I have not seen such infrastructure and facilities for a tournament anywhere. Let’s all appreciate this,” said the FIH president.

Ikram claimed that Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium has fantastic infrastructure for athletes, broadcasters and FIH’s commercial partners. “I would likely to express my sincere congratulation to the Odisha government for constructing this brand new hockey stadium with world-class facility,” said the FIH President.

Notably, the state government has been claiming Birsa Munda Stadium as the largest stadium for hockey in the world from the day of its inauguration. However, some people had expressed doubts over the veracity of the state government’s claim.

Sports and Youth Services Minister Tusharkanti Behera had earlier said the FIH has certified that Birsa Munda Stadium is world’s largest hockey stadium in terms of seating capacity.

CONWAY, WILLIAMSON STAR AS NEW ZEALAND BEAT PAKISTAN BY 79 RUNS

What a match it was in Karachi on Wednesday. Opting to bat first, New Zealand made a disastrous start losing Finn Allen early in the innings. However, Kane Williamson and Devin Conway steadied the Kiwi ship with a 181-run stand for the second wicket. Conway’s departure soon after reaching his century was a trigger point for NZ as more batters follow suit, thanks to Mohammad Nawaz’s off-spin. Nawaz bamboozled the opposition with a four-wicket burst as New Zealand lost four wickets for 16 runs in five overs. It was Mitchell Santner’s 37 that helped New Zealand reach 261. I reply, Pakistan lost both openers with just 16 runs on board. Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam did the rescue act with a 55-run stand but once the partnership was broken it was wickets at regular intervals for New Zealand. Babar put up a valiant fight with a 114-ball 79 but that wasn’t enough as Pakistan were all out for 182 in 43 overs.

TALCHER FERTILIZER PLANT WILL BE READY BY OCTOBER 2024: UNION MINISTER

The Talcher Fertilizer Plant in Odisha will be ready by October 2024 and farmers will be immensely benefitted from this plant, said Union Chemicals and Fertilizers Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Saturday.

During his visit to the State, Mandaviya visited the plant site at Talcher in Angul district to take stock of the ongoing construction work.

While speaking to the journalists, Mandaviya said, “With an intention to make the country self sufficient in Urea sector and to make Urea from the gas which is produced from our own raw materials like coal, the Prime Minister had laid the foundation stone of the Talcher Fertilizer Plant. The construction work is in full swing.”

When asked about the completion of the construction work, he said the plant will be able to start production by October 2024. Once completed, the farmers of the country will be benefitted. With this plant, not only the farmers’ Urea demand will be met but also the standard of agriculture will increase.

Back in September 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone of the plant. It is stated as nation’s first coal gasification-based fertilizer plant where synthesis gas derived from coal is used as fuel.

BCCI PICKS ODISHA’S SHIV SUNDAR DAS FOR SENIOR MEN’S NATIONAL SELECTION PANEL

The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) comprising Sulakshana Naik, Ashok Malhotra, and Jatin Paranjape on Saturday recommended Chetan Sharma as chairman of the India senior men’s selection committee.

In an official statement, the BCCI informed that the CAC had shortlisted 11 individuals for personal interviews after receiving 600 applications for the five posts. Based on the interviews, the CAC has recommended Sharma, Shiv Sundar Das, Subroto Banerjee, Salil Ankola and Sridharan Sharath for being part of the selection committee.

Sharma, who has 23 Test caps, had been holding the post in the previous selection committee since December 2020, when he replaced Sunil Joshi in the role.

He had re-applied for a role in the selection committee when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made an announcement for new applications for a fresh five-member panel on November 18, 2022.

Das, the former India men’s Test opener, was previously the batting coach of the Indian women’s cricket team while Ankola, the ex-India fast bowler, is the current chief selector of the Mumbai men’s team in domestic cricket.

Banerjee is a former India pacer who has also been the coach of fast bowler Umesh Yadav. Sharath, hailing from Tamil Nadu, is the current chairman of the Junior Men’s Selection Committee and under his panel, India won U19 Men’s World Cup in West Indies in 2022.

The task of the new selection committee will be to pick the squads for India’s white-ball series against New Zealand, set to happen later in the month.

JASPRIT BUMRAH RETURNS FROM INJURY, INCLUDED IN ODI SQUAD FOR SL SERIES

Premier India paceman Jasprit Bumrah will soon make a comeback to international cricket as he was on Tuesday included in India's squad for the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka. Bumrah last played for the Indian team in the T20Is at home again against Australia in September last year, before being ruled out of the T20 World Cup due to a stress fracture in his back.

Bumrah's return will bolster India's fast bowling department where the team has lacked genuine pace for a while.

It will be interesting to see how Bumrah is handled by the team management given his importance for the team in a year when they will play a 50-over World Cup at home.

Bumrah's inclusion comes two days after the Board of Control for Cricket in India announced new measures for ensuring that key players don't break down due to injuries ahead of big international tournaments.

Bumrah has been a key figure for Mumbai Indians in the IPL over the years and all eyes will also be on his workload management by the franchise in this year's tournament.

"Bumrah was out of cricketing action since September 2022 and was also ruled out of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup due to a back injury. The pacer has undergone rehabilitation and has been declared fit by the National Cricket Academy (NCA). He will be joining the Team India ODI squad soon," the BCCI release on Bumrah's inclusion stated.

India's updated squad for Sri Lanka ODIs: Rohit Sharma (Captain), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Ishan Kishan (wk), Hardik Pandya (VC), Washington Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj, Umran Malik, Arshdeep Singh.

PUSHKARA FIRST LOOK OUT, SABYASACHI MISHRA AND SUPRIYA STARRER ALL SET FOR GRAND RELEASE

Tarang Cine Productions’ is all set to woo Odia movie lovers with its upcoming flick ‘Pushkara’, starring Sabyasachi Mishra and Supriya in the lead. On Monday, the makers dropped the first look of the movie and the characters.

Pushkara is based on Odia Novel 'Nadabindu’ written by eminent writer Sankar Tripathy. This movie marks the directorial debut of DOP-turned-director Subhranshu Das.

With this movie, the entire team has made an attempt to give a glance into different waning traditional rituals and cultures of Odisha. Apart from that, the makers have also shed light on different ancestral occupations practiced since ages but are currently disappearing in modern culture.

The makers as well as actors are quite hopeful about the project as the storyline is original.

“Pushkara, it is not just a cinema, this is a story of a character that is raised in Odisha’s environment, tradition and culture. We have been working on this project since one year. Before and after shooting, I am still living the character with its adopted look. For the first time in my career, I’ve played such an amazing and unconventional character,” said actor Sabyasachi Mishra.

Further, the actor went on to add, “The uniqueness of this project is characterising different ancestral occupations. The character is called Pushkara.”

Apart from Sabyasachi and Supriya, several other eminent actors including Asrumochan Mohanty and Choudhury Bikash Das will also have a crucial role in the movie in different characters.
