Dr. Bhagwatsharan Upadhyay, in his book “Vrihattar Bharat” (Greater India), wrote that Buddhism was the first to spread eastward from India to China. In the 5th century, Acharya Bodhidharma traveled to China, where he developed martial arts in the form of Judo, Karate, and Kung Fu.

Acharya Bodhidharma spent his days in the Buddhist monastery of the Shaolin caves. These Shaolin cave monasteries are considered the birthplace of martial arts.

Martial arts are originally a meditation-based self-defense technique rooted in Buddhism. The Shaolin Kung Fu represents Buddhist monks undergoing martial arts training.

On the Lion Capital of Sarnath, there are two types of Ashoka Chakras — one with 32 spokes and another with 24 spokes.

The 32-spoked Ashoka Chakra is the primary one, which is why it is placed at the top, carried on the shoulders of the lions.

The 24-spoked Ashoka Chakra is the secondary one, which appears below, on the circular base beneath the lions — there are four such Chakras on the pedestal.

India chose the secondary (24-spoked) Ashoka Chakra for its national flag, instead of the primary 32-spoked one.

Two and a half thousand years ago, when the kings of Egypt were building pyramids for themselves and Alexander was spilling human blood for his so-called greatness his unbathed, foul-smelling soldiers were ravaging the honor of women from Lebanon to Persia

at that very time, the Mauryan kings of India were building networks of roads, digging wells, and planting fruit-bearing trees so that common people could live with comfort and dignity.

In those days, officials were not just tax collectors they also ensured the safety of farmers, laborers, woodcutters, and artisans.

Every few miles along the roads, stone pillars were erected to inform travelers how far they had come and how far they still had to go.

How ironic it is that such great emperors of the Mauryan Empire were labeled as Shudras in the 18th century even though during the Mauryan era, the disorder of the caste system did not exist at all!

The Persian Empire, which was 40 times larger than Alexander’s empire, had capitals like Susa and Ecbatana, yet even those paled in comparison to the magnificent capital of Emperor Ashoka the Great — Pataliputra.

The royal palace was so grand that even 650 years after Emperor Ashoka, the Chinese traveler Fa-Hien wrote that each brick was still in its original place.

Even the strongest modern cement doesn’t last more than a hundred years such was the greatness of Emperor Ashoka’s India

This is the ancient city of Bagan in Myanmar.
It was the capital of the Pagan Empire.

The kings of the Pagan Empire presented themselves as Bodhisattvas and were known as Dhamma Rajas (Righteous Kings).

During their rule of about 250 years, from the 11th to the 13th century, they built more than 10,000 Buddhist pagodas and monasteries.

The unified Myanmar was established by these Buddhist kings.

In the course of time, when a reaction began against Buddhism, the greatest damage was done to its archaeological remains. These Ashokan pillars were not only broken but also buried in the ground. In some places, the lotus-shaped capitals were destroyed, and other idols were placed upon them.

However, if one carefully observes the distinctive features of Ashokan pillars, they can be easily identified no matter how badly they were defaced.

Firoz Shah Tughlaq was so deeply impressed by the grandeur of Ashoka’s pillar that he had the pillar—originally brought by Ashoka from Chunar and erected at Topra (near Meerut)—transported to Delhi. With the help of 8,400 laborers, he had a special cart made with 42 wheels, laid the pillar on silk cotton, wrapped it in velvet to prevent scratches, and brought it safely to his fort in Delhi, where he reinstalled it.

If even a small portion of the effort made by Firoz Shah Tughlaq to preserve this glory and heritage of India had been made by the Indian governments, today the museums of India would have been filled with Ashokan relics.
