🌌 Basic Facts Distance from Sun: ~228 million km Length of day (1 sol): 24 hours 37 minutes Length of year: 687 Earth days Gravity: ~38% of Earth’s gravity Moons: 2 (Phobos and Deimos) Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and is known as the Red Planet because its surface is rich in iron oxide, giving it a reddish color. It has a thin atmosphere made mostly of carbon dioxide, very cold temperatures, and low gravity—about 38% of Earth’s—which makes it unable to support human life naturally. Mars features extreme landscapes such as Olympus Mons, the largest volcano in the solar system, and Valles Marineris, a massive canyon system. Scientists have found strong evidence that liquid water once flowed on Mars, including dried riverbeds and underground ice, raising the possibility that microbial life may have existed there in the past. Because of this, Mars is a major focus of space exploration and is considered the most promising planet for future human missions and possible colonization.
