The Assam Police on Friday arrested four individuals for their alleged involvement in a drug syndicate. In a joint operation, the Assam Police and the Special Task Force (STF) conducted raids at two locations in the state's Karimganj and Cachar districts, seizing drugs worth over ₹ 120 crore.

India has exported non-basmati white rice worth USD 122.7 million during April-May this fiscal and the government is closely monitoring its production, availability and export scenario to assess suitable policy intervention, Parliament was informed on Tuesday.

The exports stood at USD 852.53 million in 2023-24, USD 2.2 billion in 2022-23 and USD 2 billion in 2021-22, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.

He informed the export of non-basmati white rice is banned at present since July 20, 2023.

However, export is allowed on the basis of permission granted by the government of India to other countries to meet their food security needs and based on the request of their government.

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) has received the largest single donation of Rs 228 Crore from its alumnus awardee Dr Krishna Chivukula. The alumnus joined the Institute in 1970 to pursue a MTech in aerospace engineering and has now established a company the INDO US MIM Tec. The donation is one of the largest ever made to an educational institution in India, IIT Madras’s press release stated.

Bridge built in open field at Bihar village, no road on either side; district admin seeks report.

According to officials, work had started on a 2.5-km road in Parmanandpur village under the CM Gramin Sadak scheme, but the process of land acquisition from local farmers had not been completed.
The construction of a 35-foot bridge in an open field, without any sign of a road connecting to it on either side, has raised eyebrows at a village in Raniganj in Bihar’s Araria district, and led to the district administration seeking a report from the Rural Works department.

According to officials, work had started on a 2.5-km road in Parmanandpur village under the CM Gramin Sadak scheme, but the process of land acquisition from local farmers had not been completed. The bridge was to be part of this project, and was meant to allow the passage of water from one side of the field to the other even after a road is built there.
The bridge was built at a spot where land had already been acquired, but the road was not yet built as the acquisition of land for that had not yet been completed.

“Rather than acquiring land and starting road construction first, the Rural Works department constructed a 35-foot bridge at piece of acquired land while showing little interest in going ahead with the project in a rational manner,” a Rural Works department official, who did not want to be named, said.

Residents of the village, however, had little idea about the project and were baffled by the construction of a bridge in the middle of a field.

Krityanand Mandal, a resident, said, “This culvert was constructed about six months ago. We thought it could be part of some big project, but when no further work was done and there was no hint of any future planning either, we wanted to bring it to the government’s notice.”

In a case of financial fraud, Basanti Pal, a resident of Newpara in Bongaigaon, has reported the theft of Rs 2,50,000 from her Punjab National Bank account. The funds were siphoned off through UPI transactions, despite Pal’s claims of not using any digital payment platforms such as ATM, Google Pay, or Phone Pay.

The scam, which has unfolded since July 18 of the previous year, involved a criminal network exploiting the UPI system to withdraw significant sums from Pal’s account. Authorities were alerted after Pal lodged an FIR at the North Bongaigaon police station, seeking justice for the unauthorized withdrawals.
