Kamalanagar: Political parties and Chakma NGOs have urged the Governor of Mizoram to reconsider the proposed arrangement for the 88th Independence Day celebration at Kamalanagar, headquarters of the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC).

The groups have objected to the plan for the SDO (Civil), Chawngte, to hoist the National Flag, stating that elected representatives should be given due recognition on an important national occasion.

They have requested that the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of CADC be given the honour of hoisting the National Flag at Kamalanagar.

A meeting on the issue was held on Thursday under the leadership of Dr. Jyoti Bikash Chakma, President of the Central Young Chakma Association, with representatives of political parties and various Chakma NGOs and voluntary organisations participating.

The groups have appealed for the matter to be reviewed in the interest of respecting the role of elected representatives.

Mizoram MLA and Chakma Autonomous District Council member Rashik Mohan Chakma has announced plans to file a review petition before the Supreme Court challenging its recent judgment on dual membership of Autonomous District Councils and State Legislative Assemblies. The petition concerns the courtโ€™s July 20, 2026 judgment in the Rustom Chakma case, which directed the Chakma and Mara councils to restore restrictions on simultaneous membership. Chakma disputed the courtโ€™s observations regarding the Lai Autonomous District Council, claiming its 2002 rules were repealed in 2010, removing the dual-membership restriction. He said this key fact was not placed before the bench.

| Former Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) Chairman and retired IAS officer Lalbiaktluanga Khiangte, a Mizo officer, was arrested by the Jharkhand Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Monday in connection with alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations. Khiangte, a 1988-batch IAS officer of the Jharkhand cadre and former state chief secretary, had resigned from his post as JPSC chairman in July after the CID registered a case against him.

A BJP delegation from โ€™s three autonomous district councils has urged the Centre to expedite the passage of the 125th Constitution , 2019, which has remained pending in Parliament for several years, the party said in a statement on Saturday, August 8.

The delegation met Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai in New Delhi on Friday and sought early action on the proposed legislation concerning the Lai, Mara and Chakma Autonomous District Councils in southern Mizoram.

The government has begun work to add the Chakma language to , with a database of 50,000 words currently being compiled as part of efforts to preserve and promote the language.

The announcement was made by Industries and Commerce Minister Santana Chakma during the first state-level Chakma and 2026 celebrations held at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan in on Friday. Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury was also present at the event.

Mizoram Home Minister K. Sapdanga on July 23 called for a clear government policy to address the growing influx of Zo ethnic people and other refugees fleeing the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) of Bangladesh, saying the issue demands urgent attention.

Speaking at a seminar titled 'The Potential Impact on Mizoram by the Increasing Subjugation of Tribal People in Bangladesh and the Chittagong Accord', Sapdanga said tribal communities in Bangladesh's hill regions were facing increasing pressure from majority communities, leading to the occupation of their ancestral lands and forcing many to seek refuge in Mizoram.

He said the influx was not limited to Zo ethnic groups, with members of the Chakma and Bru communities also crossing into the state. Churches, voluntary organisations and political parties in Mizoram have been extending humanitarian assistance while remaining mindful of the state's security concerns, he added.
