Nish*t Arora (Smoke Inc. /JamSteady), one of the India’s revered flag-bearers of live independent music and Riad Saha of Hindustan Records, the oldest vinyl record company of the country came together to address this interesting dichotomy. They believed that our present industry, in spite of its best efforts, wasn’t the best place for independent musicians to thrive in. They believed in a disruptive model that would enable musicians to make exactly what they want without adhering to any norms or standards, usually dictated by record labels or promoters. They felt the need to use their vast experience to create a platform that would be unapologetic, authentic and 100% original.
It was as a result of this insightful conversation that Mr. Babu was born. While Smoke Inc. has more than 3000 independent live events under its belt, Hindustan Records boasts of the most enviable roster of artists and records in India. It is, after all, the first record publishing and distribution company of the country! Mr. Babu is the lovechild of these two starkly different yet similar entities-their combined expertise serving as the perfect backdrop for Mr. Babu to leap ahead on its journey.
