CultureCult Press warmly invites horror writers from all over the world to send in their original fictions for our upcoming anthology “KrankenHaus”, a book of horror stories featuring haunted hospitals.

The word Krankenhaus is German for “hospital,” but broken down, it carries a darker poetry: Kranken (“the sick”) and Haus (“house”). A house of the sick. A place of healing, yet equally, a place of suffering, despair and death.

THE FINAL DATE OF SUBMISSION IS SEPTEMBER 20, 2025

Come up with your own story or feel free to get started with one of our writing prompts:

1) Dr. Som peacefully runs a human organ racket behind the facade of his private hospital, until the day a victim, oddly enough, refuses to die.

2) This was the hospital where her mother had died. 20 years later, she awaits her own recovery but something distinctly pulls her towards the private cabin where her mother had passed away.

3) The movie star had been to lots of rehabs, but there was something odd about this secluded fortress-turned-wellness centre that gave him the creeps.

4) A nurse manning a wartime medical camp inside a dilapidated church, discovers a cursed book that can restore life, in exchange for a different life taken.

5) Arthur fakes being possessed to escape a murder conviction, but as soon as he is admitted to the old sanatorium, he starts to hear a whisper that begins to drive him insane.

6) Abandoned hospitals are almost always haunted. That’s what the public believed, so such places were good to stage ghost hunting shows. Or so Raheema thought…

Unholier Than Thou seeks tales that explore the dark side of faith, belief and the devilish unknown. Religion, born of fear, is a wellspring of horror rituals. Miracles, martyrs, relics, runes, and revelations can all harbor something terrifying for even modern minds, which are far from fearless . We want stories that wrestle with the holy and the horrific, the divine and the damned; stories rooted in faith, ritual or devotion gone wrong. Think cursed relics, fallen angels, corrupt prophets, sinister cults, miracles with a price, holy places that hide unholy truths.

Feel free to come up with your own storyline or get started with one of our WRITING PROMPTS:

1) Mr. Roy is a lifelong skeptic, but when his terminally ill son is miraculously saved by holy water from the shrine of an ancient Goddess, he begins to wonder if there's something more to placebos.

2) The mysterious tribal chant was supposed to bring peace, solace, enlightenment. Instead, it sends Matthew down a rabbit hole of dark realisations.

3) The Pir Sahab believes Ahmed is under the influence of a djinn, while the young village doctor insists that he suffering from some kind of mental illness.

4) A nun fleeing religious persecution takes shelter in an abandoned hut with an altar for some strange God. When the lustful liberators find the woman, she has already transformed into something unholy.

5) A spate of possession cases in the same district sends the investigating bishop down a wicked path of epiphany as he begins to realise God's plan and the Devil's are one and the same.

6) A Hindu village priest is labeled inauspicious and is rendered jobless after marriages performed by him inevitably end with the unnatural death of a spouse within a matter of weeks.

We welcome submissions from all authors, regardless of their age, race, nationality or previous publication experience.

" " from CultureCult Press gathers words against genocide, knowing well that words have never managed to neutralise the impact of a bullet, bomb or bulldozer, nor the poison of human bias and brainwashing. These pages hold the N**i death camps, the massacres in Africa, the erasure of Crimea and of course, the ongoing slaughter in Palestine—not as lessons, because no one learns, but perhaps as accusations. As evidence. As a bitter, useless refusal to let the dead be disappeared twice: first by murder, then by silence.

Maybe this book is just another wound turned monument. Maybe it’s just moral posturing for a future that will be just as indifferent as the present. But if we are doomed to bear witness in vain, then let it at least be said: "We saw. We named it. We did the barest minimum.
