Screening & Discussion: Encountering Hate

Join us at Other Books for a screening of Encountering Hate (Nafrat ka Saamna), a 2025 documentary by filmmaker Lalit Vachani.

The 48-minute film follows Akram Akhtar Choudhary as he provides legal assistance to victims and families affected by mob lynching, vigilante violence and police encounter killings in North India.

Akram Akhtar Choudhary is a lawyer and researcher working on questions of legal aid, accountability and the rights of victims of communal and vigilante violence. His work forms the centre of the film, making this screening an opportunity to hear directly from someone whose experiences and legal work are documented in it.

The screening will be followed by an open conversation with Akram, exploring the film, the cases it portrays, and the realities behind them.

Mulaqat | Ayyankali and the Social Reform Movement

A thoughtful and engaging session at Other Books with M Nisar, exploring Ayyankali’s significant role in Kerala’s social reform movement.

Nisar offered a nuanced perspective on Ayyankali as an organic intellectual, visionary, and highly organised leader; someone who recognised the injustices of the caste system through lived experience and transformed that awareness into organised resistance.

The talk also explored how Ayyankali used attire, physical presence, and everyday social practices as forms of resistance, challenging practices that placed oppressed communities in positions of inferiority. His legacy, as the discussion highlighted, extends far beyond the familiar image of him riding a bullock cart through spaces where Dalits were prohibited.

The session became especially engaging through the curious and nuanced questions from the attendees, creating a meaningful exchange that added depth to the lecture.

The evening concluded with everyone coming together for casual conversations over tea, extending the discussion and making space for further interaction and reflection.

A few glimpses from the Screening of ‘The voice of Hind Rajab’:

It was an intense screening; bringing us closer to the extreme reality of what is happening in Gaza.

People slowly arrived, chatting and settling in. But when The voice of Hind Rajab began, everyone was tied to the frame.

We watched. We remembered. We felt the pain, the urgency, and the need to bear witness to narratives that so often remain unheard.

We left with questions; about the change the world needs, and about what it means to remain human in the face of such immense suffering.

After the screening, there was utter silence. Everyone was processing, unable to speak. Two attendees eventually found the words to share their solidarity, grief, and remembrance.

As an independent publishing house and an aspiring cultural space, we want to make room for voices suppressed across the world; for stories and narratives that deserve to be heard.

We invite you to bring those voices here. To read, listen, question, speak, and remember. To create space for stories that need to be heard and conversations that can move us towards change.

We hope our gatherings can be small seeds; for peace, solidarity, reflection, and nourishment.
