New Zealand's new government says it plans to scrap the nation's -leading smoking to fund cuts.
The legislation, introduced under the previous Ardern-led government, would have cigarette sales next year to anyone born after 2008.
Smoking is the leading cause of preventable deaths in New Zealand, and the policy had aimed to stop young generations from picking up the habit.
Health experts have strongly criticised the sudden reversal.
"We are appalled and disgusted... this is an incredibly retrograde step on world-leading, absolutely excellent health measures," said Prof Richard Edwards, a ***co control researcher and public health expert at the of ."Most health groups in New Zealand are appalled by what the government's done and are calling on them to backtrack," he told the BBC.

The legislation passed last year has been acclaimed with research models backing the key reforms.

She particularly urged young women to speak up if somebody them with such material.
Ms Mandanna shared the message weeks after a deepfake video about her went viral on social media.
The star's face was morphed onto an Instagram video posted by a - .
She had described the incident as "extremely scary" at the time.
On Monday, the actress, 27, said the support from her film industry colleagues made her realise that sharing of such videos shouldn't be normalised.
"It [the ] made me feel safe, and secure," she told the media on Monday.
"So I want to tell all girls out there that this is not normal. When something is affecting you, you don't have to keep quiet."
In a statement on X (formerly ) soon after her deepfake went viral, Ms Mandanna wrote, "If this happened to me when I was in school or college, I genuinely can't imagine how could I ever tackle this."
The actor said she was grateful for the support of her and and called for the issue to be addressed with urgency "before more of us are affected by such identity theft".
India's Ashwini Vaishnaw has called such videos a "new threat to ".
Last week, Mr chaired a meeting with and artificial intelligence companies where he said the federal government would soon come up with a "clear, actionable plan" to tackle .

Australia will ban imports of disposable v**es from January, in an effort to curb ni****ne addiction in children.

New laws to stop single-use v**es from being made, advertised, and supplied in the country will also be introduced.

It comes amid a broader push to phase out recreational va**ng completely.

Va**ng has been marketed as a way to quit smoking, but Australia's health minister says it has created a "new generation of ni****ne dependency".

Vapes, or -ci******es, are lithium battery-powered devices that have filled with liquids containing ni****ne, artificial flavourings, and a range of other chemicals.

It has been illegal for any to purchase or import e-ci******es or ****ne v**es without a doctor's prescription since 2021, but despite those restrictions rates of addiction have continued to .

A study from the University of earlier this year found that over a quarter of teenagers aged 14-17 had v**ed, while research from Australia's Cancer Council charity found that nine out of 10 teenagers in the same age group found it easy to access ni****ne v**es.

"All governments are committed to working together to stop the disturbing growth in va**ng among our young people," said Mark Butler, the federal who is leading the ban.
In May, the Australian government signalled its intention to phase out the use of single-use v**es, but until now it had provided no concrete timeline.

Mr Butler says that the import on v**es will start on 1 January, and that by March refillable non-therapeutic v**es will also be from entering the .

Importers and manufacturers supplying therapeutic **es will also have to comply with tighter government regulations concerning the flavours, ni****ne levels, and packaging of their products.

Airlines see the flight, which is supported by funding, as demonstrating that a greener way of flying is possible.
But a lack of supply remains a challenge, while other technology will be needed to hit emissions targets.
So-called aviation fuels (SAF) can be made from a variety of sources, including crops, household waste and cooking oils.
For this flight, a Boeing 787 will be filled with 50 tonnes of SAF. Two types are being used, with 88% derived from fats and the rest from the wastes of corn production in the US.
Following test and analysis, the flight was approved by UK regulator the Civil Aviation Authority earlier this month. A number of companies have been involved in the project including engine-maker Rolls-Royce and energy giant BP.
The aviation industry is seen as particularly difficult to decarbonise, but airline bosses view SAF as the single most effective way to bring its net emissions down to zero.
Planes still emit carbon when using SAF, but the industry says the "lifecycle emissions" of these fuels can be up to 70% lower.
SAF is already used in small amounts, blended with traditional jet fuel, but accounts for less than 0.1% of the aviation fuel consumed around the world.
It currently costs more than kerosene, and relatively small amounts are made. Aircraft are usually only allowed to use up to 50% in a blend.
There are no dedicated commercial SAF plants in the UK, although the government's aim is to have five under construction by 2025, supported by grant funding.
