Parking at six Municipal Corporation-run sites in Chandigarh is now free, including the city’s multi-level parking facility in Sector 17. The decision follows a review of low revenue from some paid parking facilities and the need to improve parking infrastructure. The MC has clarified that these sites have been made free for now, rather than announcing a permanent end to parking charges.

Apart from the Sector 17 multi-level parking, the free facilities include the parking behind SCOs in Sector 9-D on Madhya Marg, the site in front of Code Gym in Sector 8, the parking behind SCO 1-16 in Sector 7-C on Madhya Marg, and two additional sites in Sector 8. Staff from these locations will largely be redeployed to other paid parking facilities.

The Sector 17 facility was constructed around 11 years ago at a cost of approximately ₹48 crore. Spread across 4.78 acres, it can accommodate around 760 cars in three basement levels and 240 two-wheelers on the surface. Earlier charges were ₹10 for four-wheelers and ₹5 for two-wheelers. Of the 23 employees previously deployed there, seven will now remain for security and sanitation.

The MC is also examining a participatory model under which selected parking facilities, including the Sector 17 multi-level lot, could eventually be managed by respective market welfare associations. Chandigarh Beopar Mandal president Sanjiv Chadha said associations would require financial support from the civic body to take on staffing and management responsibilities.

The week-long farmers’ protest at the Chandigarh-Mohali border ended on September 7 after the Punjab Government handed written assurances to representatives of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM). Farmer leader Balbir Singh Rajewal announced the withdrawal of the agitation after Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian delivered the government’s written commitment. Protesters subsequently began dismantling their camps and returning home.

The breakthrough followed talks between representatives of farmer organisations and Punjab ministers Gurmeet Singh Khudian and Dr Balbir Singh. The assurances cover issues including river-water agreements, provisions of the Punjab Reorganisation Act, farmers’ loans, sugarcane payments, the Dam Safety Act and proposed seed legislation.

A key commitment is that the Punjab Government will convene a special session of the Vidhan Sabha within one month. The House is expected to consider resolutions concerning Punjab’s inter-state water agreements and related provisions of the Punjab Reorganisation Act, while certain demands requiring action from the Union Government will be taken up with the Centre.

The SKM agitation had begun on September 1, with farmers raising demands including a legal guarantee for MSP, debt relief and action on Punjab’s water-related concerns. The protest concluded only after the unions received the written assurances they had sought from the state government.

Punjab Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian said the concerns raised by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) had been heard at both the Punjab and Union government levels and expressed confidence that the issues could be resolved. Referring to the week-long agitation, Khudian said the protesting farmers would return home, remarking that they would “have food in their own homes” after spending several days at the Chandigarh-Mohali border.

The statement was followed by a concrete breakthrough on September 7, when Khudian handed farmer leaders a written assurance from the Punjab Government. Following this, SKM representatives announced the withdrawal of their protest and farmers began dismantling their camps and returning home. The agitation had started on September 1 over a broad set of agriculture, water, debt and policy-related demands.

Among the commitments, the Punjab Government said it would convene a special Vidhan Sabha session within one month to take up issues concerning Punjab’s river-water agreements, provisions of the Punjab Reorganisation Act and other matters. The assurance also addressed farmers’ loans through a proposed one-time settlement mechanism, sugarcane payments and the formation of a committee to examine remaining demands. Some issues require action by the Union Government, so their final resolution remains dependent on subsequent governmental decisions.

The latest development means Khudian’s earlier expectation that the protest would end was subsequently realised: the SKM formally called off its week-long Chandigarh-Mohali border agitation on Monday evening after receiving the written commitments it had demanded.

Panchkula Skaters Dominate State Skating Championship 400 Skaters From 22 Haryana Districts Compete

Panchkula skaters delivered an impressive performance at the 59th Haryana School State Skating Championship held at Anant Raj Building, Sector 22, Panchkula. Organised by the Panchkula Education Department, the championship witnessed participation from around 400 skaters representing 22 districts of Haryana across different age categories.

Skaters from Rolling Tigers Skating Academy secured multiple medals. In the girls’ U-14 Quad category, Stakshi Misri won gold medals in both the 500m and 1000m events. She was also named Group Champion and selected to represent the state at the upcoming national competition.

In the boys’ U-14 Quad category, Arnav Singh Jina secured gold in both the 500m and 1000m events. Prisha won gold in the 500m and two silver medals in the 1000m and long road race, earning the Group Champion title in the girls’ U-14 Inline category. Kaina Bhardwaj added gold, silver and bronze medals, while Akasa Sharma secured bronze. In the Under-11 Open category, Narpendyah Chaudhary won three gold medals across road and rink races.
