With New Delhi turning into a diplomatic hub ahead of the 18th BRICS Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and is scheduled to meet Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian later on Friday. A much-anticipated bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping is scheduled for Saturday.

Modi will meet Pezeshkian at 6.15 pm at Bharat Mandapam, the venue for the September 12-13 BRICS Summit. He will also meet UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at 6.45 pm.

The Modi-Putin meeting comes as India continues to deepen its longstanding strategic partnership with Moscow amid the Russia-Ukraine war and growing Western pressure over New Delhi’s ties with Russia.

Banking services were affected across several parts of the country on Friday as the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) observed a nationwide strike demanding the immediate implementation of a five-day workweek.

Branch operations, including cash deposits and withdrawals and cheque clearances, were disrupted at several locations. With officers and employees joining the strike, a majority of public sector bank branches were either completely or partially closed.

The UFBU, an umbrella body of nine unions representing bank officers and employees, said around eight lakh workers from public sector banks participated in the strike.

Responding to an urgent medical evacuation request from the Ladakh administration, the Indian Air Force (IAF) launched a C-130 aircraft at short notice during the night to airlift a 70-year-old Ladakhi in critical condition from Leh to Chandigarh.

“The mission was executed under pitch-dark conditions in the challenging Himalayan terrain and harsh weather conditions,” a defence spokesperson said on Friday.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has arrived in New Delhi ahead of the 18th BRICS Summit, being hosted by India this weekend.

Upon his arrival, Putin was welcomed by Union Minister of State (MoS) for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh.

President Putin’s arrival sets the stage for crucial bilateral talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday and an address at the BRICS Business Forum.

The discussions are expected to focus on strategic trade resilience, cross-border payment mechanisms, energy security, and conflict-resolution pathways regarding ongoing geopolitical tensions in Eastern Europe and West Asia.

More than 42 years after their shops around the Golden Temple complex were burnt, destroyed or demolished following Operation Bluestar, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has directed the state of Punjab to allot booths/sites to the sufferers at Rs 1,000 per square yard, on a par with oustees under the subsequent Galiara Scheme.

“We have issued the directions in view of the rigour and hardship which the petitioners have faced for the last 42 years, which this court is of the firm view have infringed upon their Fundamental Rights, including the rights guaranteed under Articles 14, 21 and 19 of the Constitution of India,” the division bench of Justice Jasgurpreet Singh Puri and Justice Pravindra Singh Chauhan asserted while deciding a bunch of petitions.
