A day after the tragic death of 114-year-old marathoner Fauja Singh in an accident on Jalandhar-Pathankot National Highway, the Jalandhar Rural Police teams arrested the accused whose Fortuner had hit him before fleeing from the spot on Monday afternoon.

The accused has been identified as Canadian NRI Amritpal Singh Dhillon (26), who had returned to his native Dasupur village of the Kartarpur sub-tehsil in Jalandhar. He was arrested by the police teams from his place on Tuesday evening.

He has reportedly confessed to the crime. Dhillon was going from Bhogpur to Kishangarh when the accident took place, said officials.

"India has found an enduring space in the world of space," Science Minister Jitendra Singh said as Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla touched down.

Prime minister Narendra Modi on X said, “I join the nation in welcoming Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla as he returns to Earth from his historic mission to Space. : A large number of Kanwariyas from Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and nearby states are walking barefoot all the way to Haridwar to fetch sacred water from the Ganga and offer it at Shiva temples as a mark of deep devotion to Lord Shiva.
This sacred journey continues till July 22, culminating on Shivratri, when the divine offering is made.
To ensure smooth movement and safety, the police have implemented traffic diversions and intensified checking on major routes where Kanwariyas are expected to pass.
