Army Opens Fire in Chittagong Hill Tracts; 4 Tribal Locals K!llêd, Homes Torched.

Dhaka, Bangladesh — Violence erupted Sunday in the Chittagong Hill Tracts amid escalating tensions between tribal communities and Bengali settlers. Security forces opened fire in Guimara, Khagrachari district, killing at least 4 locals and injuring over 40. Reports suggest settler mobs later set fire to tribal houses.

The clashes followed a separate deadly confrontation in southeastern Bangladesh linked to the alleged gang r**e of a tribal schoolgirl — an incident that provoked protests and communal conflict. Officials have vowed legal action and restoration of order.

Observers warn that these events could reignite long-standing ethnic fault lines in a country already struggling with political instability and human rights controversies.

Guwahati Chakma Students’ Union Faces Backlash Over Alleged By-Law Violations, Transparency Issues.

Union Members Demand Accountability and Fresh Elections.

Guwahati, 1 September, 2025:
The Guwahati Chakma Students’ Union (GCSU) is under fire from its own students and former members, who have issued a public notice accusing the current Executive Committee of violating by-laws, suppressing transparency, and neglecting student interests. The notice details several issues, including exclusion of former members from official communications, delayed updates, secretive meetings, and quashing of critical questions.

The members also cited alarming breaches such as failing to properly elect the President according to union rules and demanded immediate written explanations and a call for a new general meeting with full student representation. If demands are not met within a week, the group warns of mass withdrawal of support for all GCSU events and donations.

With threats of widespread disassociation hanging over the organization, all eyes are now on the GCSU Executive Committee’s next move as calls for accountability and democratic process grow louder.

Ishika Chakma, a young climate advocate from Tripura, has been selected as one of 35 Climate Champions under the second cohort of the National Youth Climate Consortium (NYCC), a flagship initiative by Bring Back Green Foundation, supported by YuWaah at UNICEF India.

This prestigious fellowship recognizes young leaders between the ages of 18 and 29 who are committed to building climate-resilient communities through local advocacy and action. The selected cohort represents 32 states and union territories across India, including island and Northeast regions, and reflects a strong commitment to diversity and equity, with over half of the fellows identifying as women, and more than a third belonging to Adivasi and Indigenous communities.

As part of the fellowship journey, Ishika Chakma attended an intensive Training of Trainers (ToT) from 25 to 28 July 2025 in Dehradun, organized by Bring Back Green Foundation. The training was designed to equip fellows with knowledge and tools around stakeholder engagement, storytelling, policy engagement, and youth-led advocacy.

During the six-month fellowship, each Climate Champion will lead a grassroots project focused on one of four key areas including awareness and capacity building, youth mobilization, research, or innovation, while directly engaging local communities and working with government stakeholders to ensure lasting impact. Fellows receive microgrants, mentorship, and support from a 25-member Technical Resource Group comprising grassroots experts, youth-led organizations, and sector specialists.
In its inaugural year, the NYCC fellowship impacted over 65,000 youth and community members across the country, and several alumni went on to represent India’s youth at global platforms such as COP29. This year’s cohort is expected to continue that legacy, with opportunities to contribute to international spaces like COP30, further ensuring that youth perspectives from the grassroots inform climate policy worldwide.

Ishika Chakma will focus on the impact of monoculture on forest and biodiversity and find a sustainable solution in West and Dhalai district, aiming to strengthen youth leadership and sustainable action at the local level.
Belonging to the Chakma community—one of the 19 Indigenous communities of Tripura—she holds a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature from ICFAI University, Tripura, and a Master’s in English Literature from Maharaja Bir Bikram University, Tripura. Alongside her academic journey, she works as a content writer for Homchang A Digital Media and contributes as a writer for NorthEast Water Talk. Her passion lies in promoting and preserving Indigenous culture, language, and culinary traditions. Deeply conscious of the impacts of climate change on Indigenous livelihoods and biodiversity, she strives to explore sustainable solutions that balance cultural preservation with environmental resilience.

Beyond this, she advocates against injustices faced by women in patriarchal society, while nurturing her love for English literature and travelling.

The National Youth Climate Consortium recognizes that we must center youth who live and work at the frontline of climate crises. By bridging the gap between grassroots realities and policy spaces, NYCC not only amplifies underrepresented voices but also ensures that climate solutions are inclusive, community-informed, and sustainable.
The National Youth Climate Consortium continues to lead the way in building a participatory, bottom-up model of climate action, making youth-led engagement more equitable, participatory, and powerful than ever before.
