Did you know cricket in Chennai began way back in 1792?

But Indians weren’t allowed to play — the British kept it exclusive at the Madras Cricket Club. Enter Buchi Babu Naidu, a true game-changer from Mylapore. In 1888, he founded the Madras United Cricket Club, gave free coaching, brought gear from England, and formed Native 11 — the first Indian cricket team from Chennai.

By 1892, they were challenging British teams. Slowly, matches like Indians vs Europeans gained momentum — leading to the legendary Presidency Matches in 1908. That became the Buchi Babu Trophy, laying the foundation for Chennai’s iconic Pongal Test series.

From outsiders at Chepauk to legends in yellow — Chennai’s cricket journey started with Buchi Babu and his vision.
