Sonae Arauco, one of the world’s leading producers of wood-based panels, has successfully started up the first industrial-scale fiberboard recycling line at its Mangualde mill in Portugal at the beginning of Q3 of 2025.

This groundbreaking project, delivered by the international technology group ANDRITZ, marks a major step forward in sustainable fiberboard production and circular economy practices. The new line enables efficient transformation of fiberboard recycling material into reusable fibers for the production of new MDF/HDF panels. At the core of this innovation is the ANDRITZ Steam-Ex system, the pretreatment process equipment based on steam explosion, to defiber fiberboard material most effectively.

The process equipment enables continuous, energy-efficient operation while ensuring outstandingly low steam consumption. This results in an overall higher level of yield relative to other fiberboard recycling processes.

Bluewave technology is a different, patented, and proprietary mechanical-powered dispersion technology established by R&D at Dow. It helps our production facilities and research teams to expand polymer into the water, which shows an aqueous dispersion outcome. This is alike solvent-based polymers, primarily more cost-effective. The mechanical dispersion technique needs modified polymers before dispersion in the water, which leads to the altered resin attributes and increases cost.

The American Forest and Paper Association (AF&PA) announced that on September 5, President Trump signed an Executive Order (EO) making changes to EO 14257 from April.
The new EO outlines what products and materials can enter the U.S. duty-free (zero percent tariffs). Three wood pulp tariff codes were added to the list.
Pursuant to this new EO, imported wood pulp will come into the U.S. duty-free — an important development in the long-term trade and tariff policy discussion.
This new list is meant to capture products and materials that are not produced in the U.S. — or not produced at scale. AF&PA has continuously made this argument for specific kinds of wood pulp, such as bleached eucalyptus kraft or BEK.

Mondi, a global leader in sustainable packaging and paper, is partnering with Ekornes, the Nordic region’s largest furniture producer, to introduce an innovative paper-based packaging solution for wrapping high-end mattresses, replacing the previous plastic solution.

Ekornes is using Mondi’s re/cycle CompressWrap to securely wrap its mattresses and protect them during transport. The mattress packaging consists of two components: compress wrapping and secondary packaging. For the first step, Mondi’s Functional Barrier Paper 95/5 ensures durability and vacuum sealing during the compression process thanks to its thin coating layer.

Whether it’s a sandwich, soap, or a toy car, consumers are accustomed to being able to inspect a product through the packaging, or at least through a viewing window, before purchasing.
Therefore, delfort is launching thinwrap transparent gloss HS, a transparent paper. “It’s heat-sealable, recyclable, and certified for direct food contact,” says Peter Hackl, Head of Packaging at delfort. The new paper will be presented at Fachpack at the end of September.
“With our new thinwrap transparent gloss HS, you can now create viewing windows or even fully paper-based packaging without compromising protection, sealing performance, or product presentation,” says Hackl. A key technical feature is the fully coated surface with an A-A heat-sealable solution. This allows a single roll format to be used for different packaging sizes and types – both printed and unprinted.
“This simplifies operations,” says Hackl. Furthermore, the paper has a glossy surface and a good grip.
