The National Women’s Conference Focuses on "Empowering Women for Leadership in a Synodal Church"

Jharsuguda, Odisha, September 23, 2024: The sixth National Women’s Conference of the CCBI brought together 453 women leaders from 132 dioceses across India. The event, held at Utkal Jyoti, the Regional Pastoral Centre in Jharsuguda, Odisha, focused on the theme "Empowerment of Women for a Synodal Church," emphasizing the critical role of women in building a more inclusive and participatory Church.

Odisha, a state known for its rich tribal culture with 62 distinct tribes, provided a fitting backdrop for discussions on the importance of women’s leadership in the Church. The conference was inaugurated by Archbishop John Barwa, S.V.D., of Cuttack-Bhubaneswar and presided over by Bishop Kishor Kumar Kujur, Chairman of the CCBI Commission for Women and Bishop of Rourkela.

The keynote address was delivered by Rev. Dr. Stephen Alathara, Deputy Secretary General of the CCBI. Other notable speakers included Mr. Rakesh Singh, Sr. Lidwin Fernandes, U.F.S., Executive Secretary of the CCBI Commission for Women, and Ms. Mary Soreng, President of the Sambalpur Diocesan Women’s Commission.

The conference, which commenced on September 22 and will conclude on September 25, aimed to explore how women’s voices can enrich the Church’s mission of dialogue, unity, and action. Various sessions highlighted the need to empower women in leadership, decision-making, and ministries, encouraging their active roles in the Church’s synodal processes.

The event was animated by prominent women leaders such as Ms. Pallavi Gosh from Guwahati, Ms. Rita Fernandes from Mumbai, and Ms. Easterlinda Thyrniana from Imphal. Along with them, Sr. Lidwin Fernandes, Fr. Chetan Machdo, and Fr. Rudolph Pinto played key roles in facilitating discussions.

A significant focus of the conference was on implementing the CCBI Pastoral Plan at regional and diocesan levels. Participants also delved into the CCBI Women’s Commission Guidelines and Gender Policy, seeking ways to integrate these frameworks more effectively into Church life.

Ms. Catherine Saysai, General Secretary of the Manipur Catholic Women Organisation (MCWO) from Imphal Archdiocese, expressed her joy at participating in the national conference, describing it as a source of encouragement for the suffering women of Manipur. "The love and support of the women leaders here is both uplifting and consoling," she said.

Dr. Julie Rose, a medical practitioner with the Indian Air Force in New Delhi, was equally inspired. "This conference has been a profound learning experience. The dedication of grassroots women leaders from rural India has touched me deeply. Their commitment is truly inspiring," she shared.

The participants were spiritually enriched by the Holy Eucharist celebrations, led by Archbishop John Barwa, Bishop Kishor Kumar Kujur, Bishop Niranjan Sualsingh of Sambalpur, and Bishop Anthonis Patras of Ambikapur.

The CCBI Women’s Commission, with 132 diocesan units, is dedicated to the formation and empowerment of over nine million Catholic women across India.

உள்ளூர் ஊழியர்களுக்குப் பயிற்சி அளித்து, சுவிசேஷப் பொறுப்புகளை ஒப்படைத்த பிறகு, கிளார்க் 1854ஆம் ஆண்டில் பெஷாவரில் ஒரு மிஷன் தளத்தை நிறுவினார். அடுத்த பத்து வருடங்களுக்கு அவர் லாகூர் மற்றும் திபெத் வரை மலைகள் மற்றும் பள்ளத்தாக்குகளில் வாழும் மக்களை அடைய ஆபத்தான பிரதேசங்கள் வழியாக பயணங்களை மேற்கொண்டார். இந்த காலகட்டத்தில் அவர் தனது ஊழியத்தின் சிறந்த பங்காளியாக இருந்த எலிசபெத் மேரி பிரவுனை மணந்தார்.

Church in India Launches Migrant Support Portal

Bangalore, 27 September 2024 (CCBI): The Catholic Church in India has unveiled a new digital portal aimed at supporting migrants across the country. The portal was officially launched by Cardinal Philip Neri Ferrão, President of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) and the Archbishop of Goa.

Archbishop Victor Henry Thakur, Chairman of the CCBI Commission for Migrants and Archbishop of Raipur; Archbishop Anil J.T. Couto, Secretary General and Archbishop of Delhi; Archbishop Elias Gonsalves of Nagpur; Rev. Dr. Stephen Alathara, Deputy Secretary General of CCBI; Fr. Adv. Jaison Vadassery, Executive Secretary to the CCBI Commission for Migrants; and Rev. Dr. Cyril Victor, Coordinator of the CCBI Media Apostolate were present during the launching ceremony.

The new portal, integrated within the Catholic Connect platform, seeks to assist migrants moving for work, education, or other reasons of displacement. This initiative aligns with the vision of Pope Francis, who advocates for welcoming, protecting, promoting, and integrating migrants and refugees.

India, home to one of the world's largest diasporas, has over 450 million internal migrants. These individuals often face challenges related to displacement, exploitation, and access to basic services. In response, the Catholic Church is stepping up efforts to assist migrants, refugees, internally displaced persons, unaccompanied minors, and victims of human trafficking.

The portal will serve as a vital resource, allowing migrants to register and access Church services regardless of their location. Dioceses and parishes across India will support the initiative by helping migrants register, while trained volunteers from migrant communities will extend aid to those in distress.

Fr. Adv. Jaison Vadassery emphasized that the service is open to all, regardless of caste, creed, or religion. "The portal will enable the Church to accompany migrants in a more meaningful way, as we did during the COVID-19 pandemic," he said.

The platform will help migrants enrol in government schemes and provide assistance during emergencies, such as securing healthcare or education for their children.

The Church’s new initiative aims to empower migrants, helping them integrate into their host communities while remaining connected to their cultural and religious roots.

Church Plays Vital Role in Nation-Building: CCBI Deputy Secretary General

Kochi, August 15, 2024: The Church in India holds a crucial role in the nation-building process, stated Rev. Dr. Stephen Alathara, Deputy Secretary General of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI). He made these remarks while inaugurating a programme to honor retired officers of the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force in Kochi, Kerala, on August 15, 2024, coinciding with India’s 78th Independence Day celebrations.

“The Church in India is deeply involved in nation-building through its educational, healthcare, and social outreach initiatives,” Rev. Dr. Alathara emphasized. “With 50 million students attending Catholic schools across the country every day, it is our duty to form responsible citizens who uphold democratic and secular values.”

The event recognized over 50 retired military officers who served the nation with distinction. The ceremony was preceded by a patriotic song competition, featuring more than 200 young participants, which stirred a sense of patriotism among the audience.

Titled "Vandhe Baratham," the event was organized by the Youth Commission of the Archdiocese of Verapoly, Kerala. Fr. Jiju Cleetus, Secretary of the Youth Commission, presided over the programme. T.J. Vinod, Member of the Kerala Legislative Assembly representing Ernakulam, delivered the felicitation address.

Speakers at the event included Mr. Francis Shenson, Mr. Rajeev Patrick, Mr. Vinoj Varghese, Ms. Dona Earnest, and Mr. Sobin George.
