Indian Wedding History & Traditions
Indian weddings trace back over 4,000 years to the Vedic period (1500–500 BCE). Ancient scriptures like the Rigveda outlined key marital customs such as the Saptapadi (Seven Steps) and Agni Sakshi (sacred fire witness). Over time, influences from Mauryan (322 BCE), Mughal (1526 CE), and regional dynasties added cultural richness and grandeur. Despite modernization, core rituals like Haldi (turmeric ceremony), Mehendi (henna art), Kanyadaan (giving away the bride), Mangalsutra tying, and Varmala (garland exchange) remain sacred and widely followed. These rituals symbolize purity, commitment, and the spiritual bond of marriage in Indian culture.
