One of my favorite things about Jesus’ first miracle is that it happened at a wedding. (John 2:1–11)
A wedding feast was running out of wine, and in that culture, that would’ve brought tremendous shame to the bridegroom and his family. But Jesus didn’t just quietly prevent their embarrassment—He provided the very best wine. He didn’t merely cover a potential disgrace; He replaced it with abundance, joy, and honor.
That’s just like Jesus.
The enemy loves shame.
He loves to dig up your past, remind you of your failures, twist your story, and convince you that your identity is found in what you’ve done or what other people think about you. Sometimes he’ll even use religious language or people quoting Bible verses out of context to do it. Shame can sound spiritual while completely missing the heart of God.
The Holy Spirit convicts us so we can come closer to Christ. Shame condemns us to make us run from Him.
Those are not the same thing.
Romans 8:1 says,
“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
That verse doesn’t mean we live however we want. Following Jesus means daily surrender, repentance, and allowing Him to transform us. But once we’ve brought our lives before Him, we don’t have to keep carrying the accusations that He already paid for.
Lately, we’ve received comments trying to shame us, question our motives, or define us by things outside of God’s voice. And every time I read one, I’m reminded that shame is never a fruit of the Spirit.
Love.
Joy.
Peace.
Patience.
Kindness.
Goodness.
Faithfulness.
Gentleness.
Self-control.
Those are the marks of God’s Spirit.
Accusation, condemnation, and delighting in someone else’s shame belong to a different kingdom.
If you belong to Christ, don’t let the enemy convince you to wear a label Jesus already took off of you.
Lift your head.
The One who turned water into wine is still in the business of bringing beauty where there was brokenness, joy where there was sorrow, and honor where shame once tried to live.
And that’s the kind of Bridegroom I want to spend my life talking about. 🤍
