It is incredibly hard not to yell when you are being yelled at by a tiny human. Our instinct is often to match their volume, to regain control, or to shut the emotion down quickly. However, a child in the middle of a tantrum is drowning in an emotion they don't understand yet.

Taking a deep breath and lowering your voice when your child is raising theirs is one of the hardest (but most powerful) parenting skills you can practice. You are their anchor.

For generations, the standard parenting playbook relied on shame: time-outs, scolding, or making kids feel bad so they wouldn't repeat a mistake.

You are all sitting together in the living room, but everyone is in a completely different digital world. Between work emails, social media, and their favorite games, it’s easier than ever to be in the same room but entirely disconnected from each other.

But our kids don't need us to have 100% battery life; they need us to be 100% present.

When we are stressed, it's so easy to label it as them just being naughty or stubborn. But young kids don't have the emotional vocabulary to say, "I'm overstimulated". Instead, they act out. Next time a tantrum hits, take a deep breath and look past the behavior.

Are they hungry? Exhausted? Needing connection?
When we address the need rather than reacting to the behavior, everything changes.
