Sketch Stories: Two men and a Memorial.

Two unemployed youth from Kerala started their journey to the dreamland of all Malayalees, Dubai, but ended up in then Madras ( now Chennai). They landed near the Schmidt memorial in Besant Nagar beach / Elliot’s beach.

K.A.J Schmidt was born in Denmark in 1901. He was posted in Madras office of the East Asiatic company in 1921. On Dec 30, 1930, he saved the life of an English girl who was struggling in the sea and Schmidt lost his own life during the incident. The then Governor of Madras built this memorial to recognise Schmidt’s gallantry and bravery.

Kuruthola Perunnal.

Palm Sunday, otherwise known as Osana Njayarazhcha or Kuruthola Perunnal in Malayalam. Celebrated in preparation to the Holy Week. On this day, Christians in Kerala go in procession around the church premises or through the streets holding tender palm leaves. The faithful practices this in remembrance of the day on which Jesus Christ's victorious entry into the city of Jerusalem.
