Russia said that it shot down three dozen Ukrainian drones heading toward Moscow while Ukraine said that Russian missiles, drones and bombs killed at least two civilians, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy persevered with efforts to bolster international support for his country at a UN gathering of world leaders on Tuesday.
With his troops under strain on the front line after more than three years of fighting Russia’s bigger invading army, Zelensky was due to begin meetings with leaders gathered in New York this week for the UN General Assembly.
Peace efforts set in motion by US President Donald Trump since he returned to office in January appear to have stalled. Trump’s Alaska summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin and a White House meeting with Zelenskyy and key European leaders took place more than a month ago, but the war has continued unabated.
Zelenskyy said that he met late Monday in New York with Keith Kellogg, Trump’s special envoy. Kellogg and Zelenskyy discussed cooperation agreements on the manufacturing of drones and Ukraine’s purchase of American weaponry, the Ukrainian president said on Telegram.

NATO warned Russia on Tuesday that it would use all means to defend against any further breaches of its airspace after the downing earlier this month of Russian drones over Poland and Estonia’s report of an intrusion of Russian fighter jets last week.
The September 10 incident in Poland was the first direct encounter between NATO and Moscow since the war in Ukraine began. It jolted leaders across Europe, raising questions about how prepared the alliance is against growing Russian aggression.
Estonia said three Russian fighter jets entered its airspace for 12 minutes on Friday without authorisation, a charge that Russia has rejected.
“Russia should be in no doubt: NATO and Allies will employ, in accordance with international law, all necessary military and non-military tools to defend ourselves and deter all threats from all directions,” the alliance said in a statement.

PixVerse, a leading AI video platform, recently made its debut at Busan ACFM•InnoAsia, presenting ten AI-powered films and launching its first AI Boot Camp in the festival’s InnoAsia section. The initiative showcases how AI can empower filmmakers while complementing traditional storytelling, offering creative tools without replacing artistic vision.
Ten Films Selected Worldwide
From the “PixVerse AI Film Global Submission: Showcase Your Work to Busan”, ten projects were chosen for screening, including The Bricks, Kiyosumi Shirakawa, Me, Soul Matters, and YEIPHO. Themes range from a poetic short on life in a nursing home, to experimental blends of live-action and AI, to a sci-fi exploration of human and machine consciousness.
Creators hailed from countries including Italy, Portugal, China, with both film industry professionals and first-time storytellers. Each used PixVerse to bring their ideas from concept to screen. Selected filmmakers attended BIFF for screenings, discussions, and industry networking.

Gold prices surged Rs 2,700 to scale a new peak of Rs 1,18,900 per 10 grams in the national capital amid sustained global demand for the safe-haven asset while rupee touching a new low facing the brunt of US H-1B visa fee hike.

As the Gaza war rages on, France and Saudi Arabia are chairing a high-profile meeting at the United Nations on Monday aimed at galvanising support for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with more nations expected to recognise a Palestinian state in defiance of Israel and the United States.
The meeting and expanded recognition of Palestinian statehood are expected to have little if any actual impact on the ground, where Israel is waging another major offensive in the Gaza Strip and expanding settlements in the occupied West Bank.
The meeting is set to begin at 3 pm ET (1900 GMT), with several world leaders expected to speak. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is expected to address the meeting by video after he and dozens of other senior Palestinian officials were denied US visas to attend the conference.
The United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and Portugal recognised the state of Palestine on Sunday, and the Palestinians expect a total of 10 countries, including France, to do so in the coming days. Around three-fourths of the 193-member United Nations recognises Palestine, but major Western nations had until recently declined to, saying one could only come about through negotiations with Israel.

Tech giant Oracle will receive a copy of the algorithm powering TikTok to operate for US users, according to a senior official in President Donald Trump’s administration on Monday.
Determining next steps for the algorithm, currently owned by the Beijing-based ByteDance, has been one of the most closely watched issues during negotiations over TikTok’s future.
The Trump administration official, who insisted on anonymity to discuss the emerging deal, said they believe the plan will satisfy national security concerns if TikTok divests from its Chinese parent, ByteDance. President Joe Biden signed bipartisan legislation before leaving office requiring the Chinese company to sell its assets to an American company or face a ban.
American officials have previously warned the algorithm that fuels what users see on the app is vulnerable to manipulation by Chinese authorities, who can use it to shape content on the platform in a way that’s difficult to detect.
“It wouldn’t be in compliance if the algorithm is Chinese. There can’t be any shared algorithm with ByteDance,” said a spokesperson for the House Select Committee on China.

The Ukrainian army is especially eager to deploy what soldiers refer to as “robots on wheels” as it faces a shortage of soldiers in a war that has dragged on for more than 3 ½ years. The vehicles look like miniature tanks and can ferry supplies, clear mines and evacuate the wounded or dead.
“It cannot fully replace people,” said the commander of a platoon of the 20th Lyubart Brigade who goes by the call sign Miami and spoke on condition of anonymity in line with military rules. “I would put it this way: A person can go in there, but for a human it’s (sometimes) far too dangerous.” The robotic vehicles are mostly made by Ukrainian companies and range in cost from about USD 1,000 to as much as USD 64,000, depending on their size and capabilities.

At least 24 people, including women and children, were killed and several others injured on Monday when explosive materials stored at a compound owned by the Pakistani Taliban exploded in northwest Pakistan, police said.
The incident took place in Tirah Valley’s Matur Dara area in Khyber district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, bordering Afghanistan.
The local administration denied the rumours about aerial strikes by the Pakistani fighter jets on the compound, saying the explosives used in bomb making exploded, causing the death of 24 people, including 14 militants.
At least 10 civilians, including women and children, were killed, along with 14 militants in the explosion, Station House Officer, Tirah police Station, Zafar Khan said.
The residents, however, claimed that the compound was hit by air strikes.
The compound had been home to a large number of local militant leaders and operatives, including dozens of Afghan fighters. It was regarded as a hub for the production of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and sniper training.

China on Monday declined to comment on US President Donald Trump’s move to impose a hefty USD one lakh fee for H-1B visas, but at the same time invited global professionals to work in the country as it prepares to roll out a new employment visa next month.
On Friday last week, the Trump administration announced a USD 1,00,000 fee on H-1B visas. The fee is a one-time fee on submission of a new H-1B petition.
“China will not comment on the US visa policy,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun told a media briefing here when asked about Trump’s decision.
However, at the same time, he said in the era of globalisation, cross-border talents promote technological and economic progress globally, and Beijing welcomes global professional talent to explore opportunities in the country.
China welcomes “talents from various industries and areas across the world to come and stay in China, jointly contribute to the progress of the human society and achieve success in their careers”, Guo said.

The Supreme Court on Monday refused to interfere with a Delhi High Court order dismissing actor Jacqueline Fernandez’s plea to quash ECIR (equivalent to FIR) in a Rs 200 crore money laundering case involving alleged conman Sukesh Chandrasekhar.
“We will not interfere at this stage,” a bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and Augustine George Masih told senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, who represented Fernandez.
The plea filed through advocate Sumeer Sodhi, Fernandez has challenged the high court’s July 3 order which dismissed her petition seeking quashing of the Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) in the money laundering case.
Fernandez is an accused in the money laundering case lodged against Chandrasekhar and had appeared before the Enforcement Directorate for questioning in the investigation.
Delhi Police booked Chandrasekhar for allegedly duping the spouses of former promoters of Ranbaxy, Shivinder Singh and Malvinder Singh of Rs 200 crore.
