India Announces Stringent Diplomatic and Security Measures Following Pahalgam Terror Attack

New Delhi, April 23, 2025 — In a high-level security meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Government of India has announced a series of decisive and hard-hitting measures in response to the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.

The decisions, aimed at sending a strong diplomatic signal and reinforcing national security, include the following key actions:

1. Suspension of Indus Waters Treaty: The Indus Waters Treaty of 1960, a longstanding water-sharing agreement between India and Pakistan, will be held in abeyance with immediate effect.

2. Closure of Integrated Check Post at Attari: The Attari Integrated Check Post, a vital land crossing point between India and Pakistan, will be closed to all forms of transit and trade with immediate effect.

3. Revocation of SAARC Visa Exemptions for Pakistani Nationals: Pakistani nationals will no longer be permitted to enter India under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme (SVES). All previously issued SVES visas to Pakistani nationals are deemed cancelled.

4. Expulsion of Current Pakistani SVES Visa Holders: Any Pakistani national currently present in India on an SVES visa is required to leave the country within 48 hours.

5. Expulsion of Military Personnel in Pakistan’s High Commission: Defence, Naval, and Air Advisors stationed at the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi have been declared Persona Non Grata and ordered to leave India within a week.

6. Withdrawal of Indian Defence Attachés from Islamabad: India will reciprocate by withdrawing its Defence, Naval, and Air Advisors from the Indian High Commission in Islamabad.

7. Reduction in Diplomatic Strength: Both nations' diplomatic missions will see a reduction in strength. India's High Commission in Islamabad and Pakistan's in New Delhi will reduce staff from the current 55 to 30 members by May 1, 2025.

These strong policy measures mark one of the most significant escalations in Indo-Pak relations in recent years. The government has reiterated its zero-tolerance stance towards cross-border terrorism and emphasized that the safety and sovereignty of the nation remain paramount.

Kolkata, April 3, 2025 – The Lok Sabha has passed the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, after an intense 12-hour debate. The bill, which secured 288 votes in favor and 232 against, introduces significant changes to the administration and management of Waqf properties across India.

The amendment proposes the inclusion of non-Muslim members in Waqf boards and enhances government oversight over Waqf properties. Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju stated that the amendments are aimed at increasing transparency and efficiency while curbing corruption within Waqf institutions. He assured that the control over Waqf properties would remain with the Muslim community, and the inclusion of non-Muslims is purely for administrative purposes.

However, the bill has faced strong opposition from various political parties and Muslim organizations. Critics argue that the changes could undermine Muslim rights and allow government intervention in religious endowments, potentially leading to the takeover of historic Waqf properties.

The bill will now move to the Rajya Sabha for further discussion and approval. If passed, it will require presidential assent before becoming law. The debate surrounding this legislation highlights its significant implications for the management of Waqf properties and the broader discourse on minority rights in India.
