๐จRohit Sharma, Virat Kohliโs ODI Future Uncertain; Australia Series Could Be Farewell
Indian cricket icons Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, absent from the national setup since IPL 2025, face an uncertain future in the ODI format.
Both retired from Test cricket earlier this year and are no longer part of Indiaโs T20I plans. While Rohit remains the ODI captain and Kohli an influential presence, neither has confirmed intentions for the 2027 ODI World Cup, and the BCCI has yet to offer clarity.
Indiaโs next ODI challenge comes in Australia from October 19, with matches in Perth, Adelaide, and Sydney. The teamโs lead-up to the 2027 World Cup includes home ODIs against South Africa in December 2025, followed by a busy 2026 schedule against New Zealand, Afghanistan, England, West Indies, and again New Zealand.
Selectors may require both veterans to feature in the Vijay Hazare Trophy later this year to remain in contention for World Cup spots. Without domestic one-day appearances, chances for selection appear slim. If excluded from 2027 plans, the Australia series could mark their final appearance in ODIs and possibly in international cricket.
Both stars last played domestic red-ball cricket in the Ranji Trophy before announcing Test retirements in May, ahead of Indiaโs tour of England.
