Racism Hurts Us All — Gorkhas Are Not Foreigners
When someone turns to you and says Bengali people are from Bangladesh, it hurts. It becomes a serious issue — it takes political shape, and rightly so. Then why is it that when the same thing is said to us — that we are from Nepal — nobody sees the pain we feel?
Let me say this clearly: it hurts us just the same.
We are Indian citizens. Gorkhas have lived here for generations. We have served this country with pride — in the military, in public service, in every walk of life. Yet we are constantly made to feel like outsiders in our own land.
The Bengal Assembly must treat this as seriously as any other form of racism. It is time for the government to table a strong, clear Bill against racial discrimination and hate speech — one that protects all communities who are being humiliated daily for their appearance, their mother tongue, or their ethnic background.
This is not about politics. This is about basic human dignity. We too deserve to feel safe and respected in our home state.
I ask our MLAs, especially those from the hills and Terai, to take the lead and place this proposal in the Assembly. If we don’t act now, we continue to allow racism to grow unchecked in our schools, our streets, and our public discourse.
We all belong here. Let the law say so too.
