Rfn. Benjamin Rai, popularly known as "BENJO," was born on July 17, 1995, to Sanu Rai and Subash Rai in Teesta Valley. Growing up alongside his sister, Barsha Rai, and his beloved suppose, Keshang Rai. Benjo's early life was filled with the love and support of his family, who instilled in him values of discipline and resilience.
His educational journey began at DP Side Primary School, where he laid the foundation for his academic pursuits. He furthered his education at Jinglam Uday Higher Secondary School and completed his higher secondary studies at SUMI Kalimpong. Throughout his schooling, Benjo exhibited a passion for sports, particularly football, which would become a significant aspect of his life. Benjo was not just a dedicated student but also a talented football player. His skills on the field earned him a place in various clubs across North Bengal, including the Darjeeling Police Football Team, Sher FC Kalimpong, and 107 TA United Darjeeling. His love for the game not only nurtured his competitive spirit but also fostered camaraderie among teammates and community members.
In pursuit of his dream to serve his country, Benjo joined the Indian Army with the 107 Territorial Army XI GR. His commitment to duty and bravery were evident in every mission he undertook. Tragically, on June 30, 2022, while serving in the army, Benjo lost his life during a devastating landslide in the Noni district of Manipur. His sacrifice in the line of duty has left an indelible mark on the hearts of his family, friends, and the community he loved.
Rfn. Benjamin Rai will always be remembered as a devoted son, a loving brother, a passionate football player, and a courageous soldier. His legacy of service and dedication to his country continues to inspire those who knew him, a shining example of heroism and selflessness.
