West Bengal schools are now required to sing the state song “Banglar Mati, Banglar Jol”, but Darjeeling communities push back, citing cultural and linguistic diversity. The song, written by Rabindranath Tagore in 1905, has long been a symbol of Bengal’s heritage and was a patriotic anthem during the Swadeshi Movement. The directive aims to foster state pride and cultural awareness in schools across West Bengal.

However, the decision has sparked debate in the Darjeeling hills, where local communities maintain distinct cultural and linguistic traditions. GTA Chief Executive Anit Thapa confirmed that the rule will not apply to GTA schools, while MLA Neeraj Tamang Zimba has requested that singing the song be made voluntary. The controversy highlights the delicate balance between state directives and preserving local cultural identity.

Sikkim’s Mint and Apple-flavoured bottled water have been declared unsafe for consumption. The discovery comes as a surprise to many, given that Sikkim, India’s first state to ban plastic water bottles up to 2 litres, has long stood as a model for sustainability. Recent inspections at the Basic Royal Norla Water Manufacturing Plant in Boomtar, Namchi led officials to collect samples of flavoured water on 15th September 2025, which later tested positive for coliform bacteria in both the State Food Testing Laboratory and NABL-accredited labs. The Health & Family Welfare Department, Government of Sikkim, subsequently issued a prohibition and recall order under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, classifying the products as “unsafe food” and directing an immediate halt to sales and distribution.

While Sikkim continues to lead the nation in green initiatives, this incident highlights a crucial gap between environmental protection and public health safety. Contaminated water can cause stomach infections, vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration, posing serious risks for children and the elderly. The case serves as a reminder that banning plastic alone cannot ensure safety, rigorous monitoring, accountability, and hygiene standards are equally vital. Safe drinking water isn’t just a consumer need; it represents public trust and collective responsibility that must be upheld by every stakeholder.

BGPM leader Anit Thapa slammed the BJP, calling its promises to the Gorkha community hollow and labeling the Interlocutor process as propaganda. He urged the Gorkhas to remain united with the state government, warning that the BJP’s interventions are politically motivated and aimed at influencing voters ahead of elections.

Thapa criticized the BJP for not providing any meaningful provisions to the community in the past, contrasting it with Kashmir, where special provisions were granted. He stressed that Gorkhas should stay aligned with the state government to protect their interests, highlighting that earlier appointments of interlocutors have done little to address genuine concerns.

In a significant ruling, the Sikkim High Court has directed the reinstatement of several important Nepali consonants “ण, श, ष, ड़, ढ़, क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ, in educational materials across the state to safeguard the authenticity of the Nepali language.

The order came in response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Shri Dhan Raj Gurung, a resident of Pakyong, who highlighted the removal of the dot (़) from the letter ‘ड़’, effectively reducing it to ‘ड’ in textbooks. He argued that such omissions distort pronunciation and compromise the originality of the script.

A report submitted by a court-appointed Linguistic Oversight Expert Committee supported Gurung’s concerns, stressing that the excluded characters are essential for the phonetic and academic accuracy of the language.

The Court, led by Chief Justice Biswanath Somadder and Justice Meenakshi Madan Rai, ruled that:

Sikkim University must ensure the immediate correction of affected books, and reject any textbook whose authors do not comply.

The Expert Committee will continue to monitor the use of Nepali in schools, universities, publications, and media.

The State Government must fully cooperate with the committee to support the preservation effort.

This judgment is seen as a major win for the Nepali-speaking community, reaffirming the language’s constitutional, cultural, and educational importance in Sikkim.
