Until nearly two centuries ago, dangerous ritual practices linked to human sacrifice and caste oppression existed in parts of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. One such ritual, known as Bhunda or Beda, involved a man sliding across a massive rope suspended over deep Himalayan gorges to “appease the gods” and protect villages from famine, disease, and disaster.

British explorers and travelers such as F. V. R***r, William Moorcroft, and the writer known as “Mountaineer” documented these terrifying rituals during their journeys through Garhwal in the early 19th century. Their reports reveal how marginalized communities were forced to risk their lives in the name of religion and tradition.
