Rakesh Tikait, a prominent leader of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU), has voiced serious concerns over what he described as the “deteriorating social fabric” of Dehradun, saying the city is no longer what it used to be.
Speaking during a protest in Dehradun over the recent murder of a student, Divyanshu Jatrana, Tikait said that the hill capital is witnessing a worrying transformation. He alleged that officials and political figures are increasingly involved in land dealings, while outsiders are also contributing to unchecked real estate activities.
Tikait further highlighted the growing menace of drug abuse, particularly around educational institutions. “An entire generation is getting destroyed due to substance abuse,” he said, warning that the situation is spiraling out of control.
The BKU leader also pointed to the ongoing migration of people from hill regions, calling it another sign of systemic neglect. He stressed that unless urgent steps are taken to address these issues, the image of “Devbhoomi” (Land of the Gods) will suffer irreparable damage.
Tikait, along with hundreds of farmers, had marched to Dehradun demanding strict action in the murder case of the student. The protest underscored rising public anger and concerns over law and order in the city, once known for its peaceful environment and academic atmosphere.
Calling for accountability, Tikait urged the administration to take firm action against those involved in illegal activities and to restore public trust.
