How do I remember KL?
I remember the first time she asked me if I would like to assist her at births. I felt so honored. From then on, sitting at births with her, I learned everything I know now—my practice, my forms—everything, I owe to her. She held my hand in birthwork like a baby when I didn’t know where else to go, and she kept holding it through, even in her final days—like she did for so many of us.
“This woman lands up on a full moon and a mother goes into labor”, she laughed!
I remember her for her spirit—always joking, always sharing nuggets of wisdom. She would stay back, observe, and then offer exactly what you needed. She had a keen eye—an eye that saw the nuanced qualities in everyone and easily spotted what needed work.
A Guru in her truest essence, she was always mentoring—even if you had just called her to say hello. Every conversation with her was a lesson: about life, about worldwork, about midwifery.
She adored children. The two times I took Divi along to Mayapur, Divi enjoyed her attention. In fact, after this birth in Vrindavan, she asked me to click a special picture of her , for my daughter (the attached picture). She would pause if she was speaking and include children. She explained to me once, while we were sitting in her room, when you host Pregnancy Gatherings Divya, she showed me a bundle of print outs with Krishna drawings and a bunch of crayon packets that she had freshly ordered, “always have something for children to engage them’ I found it so beautiful.
At another time, when children from next door , ran to her open house, and sat there mesmerised with the birth tools, she held a pelvis , a baby and weaved a story , while the children laughed. She gave them all the task of painting a big carton, which they all enjoyed.
She was fond of building things. She would sit and talk about birth or answer your question while weaving a few leaves into a beautiful Hawaiian headpiece. On our walks in and out of consults, she would stop and collect feathers and then weave a garland out of it.
“There are so many feathers here, all lying around with no one interested, haha” , she laughed. She always did.
