Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday (July 24) expressed concern over the impact of development activities in the Jorabat hills.

Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, CM Sarma said that a Supreme Court-constituted empowered committee had cited in its report about development activities in Jorabat, particularly in USTM and surrounding area, posing a huge threat of flash floods in Guwahati.

“This matter has been examined by the Supreme Court-constituted empowered committee, which has stated in its report that the development in Jorabat, particularly in USTM and the surrounding areas, pose a huge threat to Guwahati in regard to flash floods and waterlogging. Even Guwahati airport is under threat because of water coming down from the hills of Meghalaya,” the Chief Minister said.

"Meghalaya Government has stopped development activity in the Brynihat area because of pollution. Now, Meghalaya Government have to take a sympathetic consideration regarding the impact of activities in the Jorabat area on Assam," he said.

Without such steps, CM Sarma said Guwahati could become unmanageable, with incoming water overwhelming any drainage system.

“So, I’ll only appeal to the Meghalaya Government to see how development in and around Jorabat can be controlled. Otherwise, Guwahati will become an unmanageable city. It will be very difficult. We will not be able to keep Guwahati intact because the kind of water that comes down cannot be managed by any kind of drainage system," the Chief Minister said.

The Chief Minister said that he is in touch with Meghalaya Government and added that the Supreme Court of India is hearing the matter, with arguments likely soon.

"I am in touch with the chief minister of Meghalaya on the issue. However, since the matter will come up for hearing, we will argue before the Supreme Court,” he added.
