I was browsing Netflix for a good movie when I stumbled upon 'Do Paise Ki Dhoop Chaar Aane Ki Barish' (2009). The title intrigued me, so I gave it a try.

After watching, I took a moment to reflect on the story. When we think of family, we usually picture a mom, dad, brother, and sister. But this movie showed me a different side of love - a family of three unrelated people.

Juhi, a single mom and pr******te, lived with her disabled child. Debu, a lyricist, was gay and played his role genuinely, without stereotypes. His character was comforting and relatable. Debu said one line "Nothing is permanent; everything is changing, but the illusion of permanence brings happiness."

What struck me was how they found peace together despite their individual struggles. Initially, they came together out of necessity, but eventually, togetherness became their only desire.

I also noticed a subtle detail: an auto-rickshaw filled with yellow balloons appeared in the background during key moments. Yellow represents happiness, and balloons symbolize joy. Paying attention to these details adds depth to the movie.

This film beautifully highlights the power of unconventional families and the human need for connection.

Matrubhoomi: A Nation Without Women

I live in an urban area with ample exposure and opportunities. However, as a female, I occasionally face discrimination and fewer privileges compared to males. Today, I watched 'Matrubhoomi' (2003), which highlights the consequences of female feticide and infanticide on societal gender balance and stability.

The film portrays a disturbing future where an Indian village is exclusively populated by males due to years of female infanticide. A single woman is forced to marry five brothers, and her father-in-law treats her like a wife. This thought-provoking movie mirrors real-life instances of gender imbalance, leading to fraternal polyandry and bride buying in some Indian regions.

Curious about the current gender ratio, I found a government report by the Ministry of Women and Child Development. The data reveals significant improvement over the last two decades. India's gender ratio now stands at 1.06 males per female, with a s*x ratio of 1020 females per 1000 males in 2019-21, up from 991 in 2015-16.

Notably, rural areas have a higher s*x ratio (1037 females per 1000 males) compared to urban areas (985 females per 1000 males). While I'm heartened by this progress, women's safety remains a pressing concern. Women face risks in workplaces, public transportation, hospitals, and even their own homes.

Moving forward, prioritizing women's safety is crucial, alongside continued efforts to improve the gender ratio. For, without safety, women's lives are threatened, rendering statistical progress meaningless.

- Kiss on wound

Movie name: Million Dollar Slumdog

When I was a kid, I watched this movie, but at that time, I wasn't capable of understanding the gravity of Jamal's love for Latika. I wondered why Jamal was always looking for Latika; he could escape easily without her, but he chose to escape with Latika. No matter where Latika was, Jamal found her every time.

Today, I rewatched this movie again. The movie was the same, but the person watching it was not; maybe after 13 years, I watched this movie again to understand why he always looked to escape with Latika. Jamal has a good heart, with emotion and sensitivity; he cared for Latika from day one when they were kids. Between Jamal and Latika, there was friendship more than love; they both shared the same trauma and tragedy. The way Latika understood Jamal's feelings, no one else could. And yes, the distance between them worked as a spark. Latika had hope that Jamal would find her. Also, Jamal knew that the comfort Latika could give, no one else could.

I love the end of this movie, where Jamal finally got his freedom by winning the KBC show. They both met on the railway platform, where Jamal kissed Latika's cheek wound. The kiss on the wound is the summary of the movie, I guess.
