Rishi Sunak has won the race to be leader of the Conservative Party and will become UK's next Prime Minister. His only rival, Penny Mordaunt, conceded and withdrew on Monday. Sunak will become the first UK PM of Indian descent. Earlier, Liz Truss resigned from the post after 45 days in office amid massive economic crisis.

The Supreme Court gave a split verdict in the Karnataka hijab ban case as one of the judges said there was a "divergence in opinion". While Justice Hemant Gupta dismissed the petitions challenging the Karnataka High Court order and upheld the hijab ban in educational institutions in the state, Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia said, "Wearing hijab is a matter of choice".

Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), a NAAC A++ accredited university, is among the academic institutions from India which has improved its position in the London based Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings- 2023 released today by the agency. Globally, JMI moved to 501-600 ranking band this year from 601- 800 last year. JMI is at 6th rank in India amongst all institutions ranked by the coveted THE- 2023 while last year the university was at 7th position.

The founder of the Samajwadi Party (SP) Mulayam Singh Yadav has passed away aged 82 in Haryana's Gurugram. The three-time former UP CM was admitted to the ICU ward and reportedly put on a ventilator at Medanta Hospital last week after his health deteriorated. Yadav, who was also India's former Defence Minister, had been in the hospital for several days.

On its 90th anniversary, the Indian Air Force on Saturday unveiled its new combat uniform. The celebrations, which were held in Chandigarh, featured an air display over the Sukhna Lake. Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari, said, "We are also planning on induction of women Agniveers starting next year. Creation of infrastructure is in progress."

Karnataka Transport Department has issued notices to cab aggregators like Ola, Uber, and Rapido, ordering them to discontinue their auto services in Bengaluru, calling it illegal.
The development comes after complaints of aggregators charging 100 for a 2 km auto ride.
"Submit an explanation about illegal autorickshaw operation..within 3 days. If not, legal action will be taken," the notice said.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics to Alain Aspect, John F Clauser and Anton Zeilinger, according to an official tweet. They have been awarded the Nobel Prize for experiments with entangled photons, establishing the violation of Bell inequalities and pioneering quantum information science.

Comedian Raju Srivastava has passed away in Delhi at the age of 58, his family confirmed. He was admitted to All India Institute Of Medical Sciences in Delhi on August 10 after suffering a heart attack and collapsing while working out at a gym. Srivastava had underwent angioplasty and was put on a ventilator.

He stated the Laver Cup that will take place in London next week will be his last ATP event . Adani Group's AMG Media Networks Limited ( AMNL ) will indirectly buy a 29.18 % stake in NDTV and will launch an open offer for a further 26 % stake at ₹ 294 / share , the group said in a statement . Calling the acquisition offer " a significant milestone " for AMNL , its CEO and Editor - in - Chief Sanjay Pugalia said , " We look forward to strengthening NDTV's leadership in news delivery . "

India finished CWG 2022 on the fourth position on the medal standings . India won 22 gold , 16 silver and 23 bronze medals . Out of India's 22 gold medals , six came from wrestling , four from table tennis and para table tennis , three each from weightlifting , badminton and boxing . India also bagged one gold each in lawn bowls , para powerlifting and athletics .

A special court on Monday granted the custody of Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut to the Enforcement Directorate ( ED ) till August 4 in connection with the Patra Chawl land scam case . Earlier , the ED had sought an 8 - day custody of Raut . ED's lawyer claimed that Raut was summoned four times but he appeared before the agency only once .

India's 19 - year - old weightlifter Jeremy Lalrinnunga bagged gold in the men's 67 - kg category at CWG 2022. Jeremy lifted a total of 300 kg , with 140 kg in sn**ch and 160 kg in clean and jerk , setting a CWG record . India have now won two gold medals at CWG 2022. Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu bagged India's first gold at CWG 2022 on Saturday .
