A diagram of the plumbing system under a kitchen sink. Let's break down the components and how they work:

Main Components:

* Sink: The visible part where dishes are washed.
* Drain: The pipe that carries water and waste away from the sink.
* Trap: A curved section of the drain pipe that holds water to prevent sewer gases from entering the home.
* Air-Admittance Valve: This valve allows air to enter the drain system, equalizing pressure and preventing gurgling or siphoning effects.
* Garbage Disposal: A device that grinds food waste before it enters the drain.
* Dishwasher Hose: The hose that connects the dishwasher to the drain.
* P-Trap: A U-shaped pipe that holds water to prevent sewer gases from entering the house.

How it Works:

1. Water Flow: When you drain water from the sink, it flows down the drain pipe.
2. Trap Function: The trap retains a small amount of water, creating a seal that prevents sewer gases from rising into the house.
3. Air Admittance Valve: When water is drained, it creates a slight vacuum in the drain pipes. The air-admittance valve opens to allow air to enter the system, equalizing the pressure and preventing siphoning of the water from the trap.
4. Garbage Disposal (if present): Food waste is ground up by the disposal and then flushed down the drain.
5. Dishwasher Connection: The dishwasher hose connects to the drain, allowing water and waste from the dishwasher to flow into the main drain system.

In Summary:

The diagram illustrates the plumbing system under a kitchen sink, highlighting the key components and their role in ensuring proper drainage and preventing sewer gas intrusion.
