India has reduced fuel taxes and strongly denied rumours of a nationwide lockdown. Here are the key points from the latest announcements:
⛽ Fuel tax cuts
The Indian government reduced excise duty on petrol from ₹13 per litre to ₹3 per litre.
Excise duty on diesel has been reduced from ₹10 per litre to zero.
The decision was taken to protect consumers and oil companies from the impact of rising global crude oil prices.
🌍 Why the decision was taken
Global oil prices surged due to tensions and conflict in the Middle East affecting supply routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.
The government chose to absorb part of the cost through lower taxes instead of passing the full burden to citizens.
🚫 Lockdown rumours
Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said the rumours of a nationwide lockdown are “completely false.”
He clarified that no such proposal is under consideration by the Government of India and urged people not to spread panic.
🛢️ Government assurance
Authorities say fuel supply is stable and there is no shortage of petrol or diesel in the country.
Steps like export taxes on certain fuels are also being used to ensure domestic availability.
No lockdown is planned in India.
