A catastrophic flash flood on the Nepal-Tibet border swept through Nepal’s northern Rasuwa district on Wednesday afternoon, leaving at least 20 people dead and nearly 400 travelers missing, including more than 100 Indians. The sudden flow of water and debris originating from the Bhote Koshi-Trishuli river basin near the Tibetan border washed away entire settlements, bridges, and infrastructure, causing massive mudslides. Initial assessments from local authorities indicate that a magnitude 4.4 earthquake on the Tibetan side may have triggered an ice-rock avalanche or river blockage, sending a massive destructive surge downstream. “The settlements next to the river have been completely swept away. There is devastation everywhere we look”, said Rasuwa Chief District Officer Narendra Pariyar. The Nepal Tourism Board reported that approximately 400 travelers remain missing, including 291 foreign nationals such as 105 Indian citizens. Across the border in China’s Tibet region, state broadcaster CCTV reported “major casualties” and severe damage at the Gyirong port crossing. The floods have triggered an alert in downstream regions in Nepal and neighboring Indian states like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. Chief Ministers of UP and Bihar directed officials to remain on high alert and monitor the rising water levels. PM Modi spoke to Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah and conveyed condolences on the loss of lives due to the floods in Nepal and assured that India is ready to provide all possible humanitarian assistance to Nepal.
