In the villages of Unnao, we met girls who are learning to see farming as knowledge, not compulsion. We met women who are stepping into workplaces, handling processing units, managing incomes, and imagining bigger futures for their daughters.

What struck us most wasn’t just the work being done, but how deeply it is rooted in the community. Change here doesn’t arrive with grand declarations. It grows quietly — in classrooms built around farms, in conversations around kitchen tables, and in the confidence of women who are stepping out into the world on their own terms.

A story on how education, agriculture, and local enterprise are creating new possibilities for women and girls in rural Uttar Pradesh.

In Uttarakhand’s hills, ideas are not the problem. Access often is.

Our latest story for Scroll Eco India looks at how rural incubation systems — both public and private — are helping local entrepreneurs build climate-aligned livelihoods without leaving home. From h**p enterprises in Kasar Devi to aromatic farming in Almora, the story explores what happens when support systems begin reaching beyond cities.

More than entrepreneurship, this is also about trust, patience, and the possibility of staying rooted.

Delhi is heating up again.

And as the city scorches under another brutal summer, it is the people who work on its streets—vendors, recyclers, daily wagers—who carry the harshest weight of the heat, often with nowhere to pause, cool down, or retreat.

Last year, we followed a story for Scroll Eco India on how grassroots heat alert systems and community-led responses are helping people adapt, one cool corner at a time. It was an exhausting, sweaty, eye-opening day—one that reminded us how climate crises are always deeply human stories.

Some summers are survived collectively.

Revisiting this story as another summer arrives.

If we want to understand water inequality closely, we need to look at who carries water.

Because in many parts of India, water is still carried home on the heads, hips, hands, and time of women.

Before schools open, before work begins, before the day properly starts — millions of women have already walked for water.

This is not only a climate story.
Or a rural story.
It is also a story of gender.
