She founded The Talespinners in 2014. Before that, she turned around OMLogic after a founder split. She grew the team from 7 to 67 people. Revenues rose by 200% year after year. Under her leadership, the agency won accounts like HBO, Lufthansa (NRI), Oriflame, and a major political party in India.

As digital marketers, we often marvel at Finland's approach to media literacy. Since 2013, they've embedded critical thinking into their education system, teaching students to discern online hoaxes and question content sources. This initiative has led Finland to consistently top the European Media Literacy Index, showcasing the power of informed citizenship.

Contrast this with recent events in India. During the 2025 India-Pakistan conflict, misinformation surged. News channels on both sides churned out sensational claims, viral WhatsApp forwards whispered baseless rumours, and truth drowned in a sea of mis-, dis- and mal- information.

Prime-time anchors peddled unverified “intel,” WhatsApp clips stoked fear, and social media mobs demanded action before facts were checked. It was chaotic and spurred unnecessary panic among people.

The World Economic Forum has highlighted India's vulnerability to misinformation. This calls for media literacy in our education system. We must embed critical thinking into our DNA: start in primary schools, train teachers to challenge sources, host community “verification hackathons” and partner with libraries to demystify digital tools. It's only by fostering critical thinking from a young age, that we can teach our kids to navigate any media responsibly.

Now the platform’s role is no longer limited to follower engagement. The thought through captions, relevant keywords, and even location tags are not limited to Instagram anymore. These could now help you rank on Google.

We have come across some common misconceptions about Digital or Social Media Marketing Managers. Let’s clear them up.

A Marketing Manager is not supposed to do everything and if you are expecting that, you will burn them out before the first campaign goes live.

Here is what Digital or Social Media Manager should NOT do:

- NOT design every graphic, but brief the designer, give clear direction, and make sure everything aligns with the brand.

- NOT write every blog post at midnight, but shape the content plan, set the tone, and work with copywriters to deliver it.

- NOT jump on live chat to answer support tickets, but look at customer feedback to improve the journey.

- NOT code your website, but manage the developers and make sure the user experience hits the mark.

Industry Unity or a Quiet Cartel?

While working in the ad industry I have seen many trends, tools, and platforms come and go. But what has remained constant for me is the belief that the ad industry always operates on fair competition, smarter thinking, and healthier client relationships. But that seems to be going for a toss.

Recently news about major global ad agencies allegedly colluding on pricing in India broke out. Apparently they were agreeing not to undercut each other, coordinating pitch responses, even influencing broadcasters.

At first glance, it seems fair and reasonable. But when a handful of giants quietly agree not to offer discounts, coordinate pitches, and even pressure broadcasters to avoid working with independent agencies, it is no longer about healthy competition. It is blatant cartelisation!

How it affects the industry:
When the largest players quietly agree on terms, everyone else is forced to play by rules they had no part in writing.
- Clients lose the benefit of competitive pricing and more importantly, fresh thinking.
- Mid-sized, independent agencies (the ones that innovate, push boundaries, and hustle harder) misses out on key opportunities.
- The industry starts focusing on people at the big table rather than ideas and outcomes.

These kinds of malpractices not only hurt businesses but also the industry’s credibility. So,what's the way forward?

Cartels usually do not collapse from the inside. They need to be challenged from the outside.
- Let’s push for greater transparency in pitch processes and pricing standards.
- Let’s support industry bodies that represent all tiers of agencies, not just the dominant few.
- And above all, let’s keep making noise when fairness is sidelined for control.

The market deserves open, honest competition. Our clients deserve choice. And this industry deserves better than WhatsApp pacts in the dark.
