Ravi Modi's journey from childhood math whiz to the founder of Vedant Fashions, the company behind the famous Manyavar brand, is an inspiring tale of determination and entrepreneurship. As a child, Modi displayed a remarkable aptitude for mathematics, earning accolades from his parents for his early achievements in the subject.

Growing up, he joined his father's 140-square-foot retail store inside Kolkata's AC While contemplating an MBA after completing his commerce degree at St. Xavier's College, his father encouraged him to gain real-world experience.

As the business grew, Modi began to run the show and took decisions that would be a contrast to his father’s. “But one day, my father said something, and I got hurt,” Modi says. His father had questioned a decision that Modi had taken for ₹20,000. “He said ‘Humko barbad kardoge (Will you ruin us)? I might commit su***de one day.’ I said this is enough, I won’t come from tomorrow.”

He took ₹10,000 from his mother and turned to manufacturing Indian wear, selling the finished products in Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal, among others. To kickstart Manyavar, Modi began by selling a portion of his stock to Vishal Mega Mart, a cash-paying customer.

This arrangement provided the working capital he needed to sustain his business during its infancy. By 2005-06, Manyavar's products were available in large format stores (LFS) across India. He heeded his father's advice, avoiding debt and reinvesting most earnings into the business.

In 2008, Manyavar opened its first exclusive brand outlet (EBO) in Bhubaneswar, marking the beginning of an exciting growth phase. They transitioned from selling 20-25 crore INR annually to focusing on expanding EBOs, now operating over 1.3 million square feet of retail space across India.

The company operates in 230 cities and plans to expand into 150 more, particularly targeting southern regions like Bengaluru and Hyderabad. With a flexible, asset-light model and impressive returns, Ravi Modi's Manyavar is poised for sustained success in the Indian fashion apparel industry.

Upon completing his MBA in Corporate Finance from the University of Chester in England in 2014, Kabir Chandrakar faced a pivotal decision: to pursue a corporate career or embrace his family's farming legacy in Mujgahan Village, Raipur district, Chhattisgarh.

Witnessing the challenges his father faced in guava farming, particularly concerning high input costs and packaging solutions, Kabir identified a business opportunity.

In 2011-12, his father had ventured into guava cultivation, but the intricate packaging process was costly.

Kabir's keen observation led him to import essential packaging materials at a significantly lower cost.

This move not only optimized their expenses but also became a profitable venture as he sold these materials to others.

Encouraged by his family and friends, Kabir decided to focus on guava farming.

He expanded the cultivation area from six acres to 10 acres in 2015, utilizing a loan and subsidies from the National Horticulture Board (NHB).

Implementing meticulous planning, he opted for high-quality guava saplings and employed efficient drip irrigation techniques to minimize water wastage.

His dedication bore fruit, quite literally.

The guava plantation expanded to 110 acres across three locations in Chhattisgarh, with a substantial portion yet to reach full fruition.

By practicing residue-free farming, Kabir ensures the quality of his produce, maintaining a careful balance between pesticide usage and harvest intervals.

The VNR Bihi guava variety, renowned for its high yield and extended shelf life, became Kabir's specialty.

According to 30 Stades, harvesting around 40 acres, Kabir (now 32) generated Rs 2.50 Cr in revenue last year and approximately Rs 6 lakh per acre.

With the recent plantations expected to yield about 1,000 tonnes this year, Kabir anticipates a turnover of about Rs 3 Cr this year.

AVM Guava, Kabir's produce, has gained nationwide recognition, reaching markets from the North East to North and South India.

His success story has expanded beyond farming; he now offers consultation services to aspiring guava and fruit farmers, becoming a beacon of agricultural expertise in his community.

The traditional food supply chain has been plagued with problems for years, including inefficiencies, disorganization, and wastage.

Farmers often face price risks, a lack of information about demand, distribution inefficiencies, and delayed payments. To address these problems, Ninjacart was established.

It is India's largest fresh produce supply chain company that solves one of the toughest problems in the world using technology.

The company is headquartered in Bengaluru and connects producers of food directly with retailers, restaurants, and service providers using in-house applications that drive end-to-end operations.

Ninjacart has a vast supply chain that moves more than 1400 tonnes of perishable food items from farms to businesses every day in less than 12 hours.

Ninjacart has a network of 200 collection centers and 1,200 warehouses across the country.

The company's founders, Ashutosh Vikram, Kartheeswaran KK, Sharath Loganathan, Sachin Jose, Thirukumaran Nagarajan, and Vasudevan Chinnathambi, established Ninjacart in 2015.

Since then, the company has successfully built a tech-enabled supply chain for fresh farm produce, delivering over 1,400 tonnes of fruits and vegetables daily.

In an interview, Thirukumaran Nagarajan, CEO and Co-founder, shared that he spent 3-4 months sleeping in subzi mandis to gain a better understanding of the market.

He explained that he and his team would arrive at the market at eight in the evening and stay until eight or nine in the morning to gain a better understanding of the market.

According to Ninjacart's annual financial statement with the Registrar of Companies (RoC), the company's revenue from operations increased by 28% to Rs 967 crore during the fiscal year ending in March 2022, up from Rs 755 crore recorded in FY21.

The company managed to control its losses by 18.1% to Rs 308 crore against Rs 376 crore in FY21.

Additionally, Ninjacart managed to control its operating cash outflows by 18.8% to Rs 263 crore during FY22.

Payal Saha, a former inhabitant of Kolkata, founded Kati Roll Company in 2002 and has since grown its annual revenue to almost $14 million.

The popular street snack known as the "kati roll," which is a chargrilled kebab wrapped in a paratha or flatbread and originated in Kolkata, West Bengal, has now made it to the busy streets of New York and London.

A young woman from Kolkata named Payal Saha decided to launch her own food company in the US and called it The Kati Roll Company despite having no formal background in hospitality or even business. As a method to satisfy her personal appetites for the food she had grown up consuming, what initially started as a $14 million franchise with four locations throughout New York and London quickly grew.

The ability to just pick up a roll and get on with their work "seemed like a really plausible proposition for New Yorkers," the article says. The roll's adaptability—it could be eaten as a snack, a meal, or just as a finger food—also worked in Payal's favour. It is a cuisine that is both affordable and filling, she continues.

In 2002, Payal opened her first business, which catered to the late-night, after-party audiences and students. A second, larger midtown site followed in 2005, a location in London debuted in 2007, and a fourth location on the east side of Manhattan was introduced in March 2012, according to the author.

She responds, "I don't perceive fear because I don't know how to envision it. " when asked where she got the business bug. I was prepared to take on the world when I launched my business at the age of 22, which helped.

Raghuveer used to deliver packages for Amazon and now has his own start-up, proving that hard work does pay off.

It is said that necessity is the mother of invention. The statement, proves itself, time and again. Most entrepreneurial ventures are born out of necessity and aim to solve a problem. This venture, which deals with educational research and innovation, created by a mother who was concerned about the quality of her children’s education. Or this brilliant invention, that might be the solution to Bengaluru’s thermocol-clogged drains. This venture by a former delivery boy for Amazon is brilliant in its simplicity.

Raghuveer Singh Choudhary was born in an economically backward family in Jaipur. From a very early age, he prioritized work over education. Unable to complete his studies, he joined Amazon, as a delivery boy, where he got a monthly salary of Rs 9,000. Devoid of a bike, he used a cycle to deliver products to customer's doorsteps.

Raghuveer used to take frequent tea breaks while delivering products and noticed that finding a suitable spot serving great tea was difficult.

It must be noted here, that millions of Indians swear by a good cup of ‘tea’. It is not a long shot, to say that tea, can be the national beverage of the nation.

Well, it was while seeking a cup of perfect tea, that an idea dawned on Raghuveer. He would provide tea via delivery options. By his admission, today people want everything in the comfort of their home, so why not offer them what they want?

So, the young former Amazon delivery boy got to work, with three friends. Since the day he had begun working Raghuveer had saved money, and that he spent on renting out a place, hiring a person, installing phones, and making an entry into the market. The group began by taking orders from vendors in the vicinity. Soon, before he knew it, he was talking to over 100 vendors.

The tea and delivery service is so good that even vendors themselves have ordered cups. Who would not want a hot cup of tea, made using mineral water, reach them in 15 mins for just Rs 7? Raghuveer depends on phone-calls and WhatsApp, to procure orders.

A 28-year-old Kashmiri entrepreneur Malik Aadil has set up the first and largest online grocery delivery service in Kashmir. Aadil started his venture by the name of  ‘Groxery-The Store Next Door’, and is said to cover almost the entire city of Srinagar.

While talking about his app, Aadil said in the media, “I have developed an app for Groxery through which customers book their orders and we drop it at their doorsteps within 70 minutes.”

He also said that as of now the app has over 45K downloads on Android and 5K on IOS. Aadil informed that the app is planning to cover the Jammu city by the first week of February and later plans to extend district Baramulla, Budgam, Ganderbal, and Pulwama as well.

Aadil also shared about how this business idea came to be. He said, “I was working for Grofers (an Indian online grocery delivery service) in Bangalore in 2015 after completing my MBA when I decided to start my own venture. I had received a handful of experience as I was handling the marketing side of the company there.”

Reportedly, the app offers two modes of delivery- express, and slot. The express option is for urgent deliveries and is delivered within 70 minutes while the slot option is for delivery during time slots as per the customer’s convenience.

Aadil has built his own in-house inventory of more than ten thousand products. “We have ten thousand plus products available at the moment. We provide daily essentials like Grocery, household items, pet care, personal care, stationery, veggies, and others,” he said adding, “What makes us unique is that we also serve Harrisa (the minced mutton delicacy), eggs, and Kashmiri Rotis and all are in huge demands”.

His venture has also been a source of employment to the well-qualified youths in Kashmir. “Over thirty-five people, both boys and girls are working with me in the company yet. We have over ninety percent of staff from Kashmir,” he said adding that we are also planning to open Grocery branded retail stores across the city and other districts very soon.
