Celebrating the legacy of Jim Corbett

Born in 1875, Jim Corbett remains one of the most legendary figures in India’s wilderness lore. His deep empathy for both wildlife and local communities transformed him from a hunter of man-eaters into a pioneering voice for conservation.
Through timeless works, he didn’t just narrate stories; he captured the soul of the Indian jungle. He captured the pulse of the forest, it's quiet dignity, and the unspoken bond between humans and wildlife. In doing so, he preserved not just events, but an entire way of seeing and respecting the natural world—something that remains deeply relevant in today’s fractured relationship with nature.
As we mark his 150th birth anniversary, we remember not only his extraordinary adventures but also his enduring legacy in protecting India’s rich natural heritage.
Rediscover the forest through his words.

Russia's Earthquake, Tsunami Alert — a Wake-Up Call for Fragile Mountains Everywhere!!

The powerful earthquake off Russia’s eastern coast, which triggered a tsunami alert, is a chilling reminder of the raw, unpredictable power of seismic zones. Closer home, the Himalayas, young, fragile, and already geologically unstable, are being pushed to their limits.
Here, nature’s warning bells no longer whisper—they scream in the form of landslides, flash floods, cloudbursts, and tremors. In Uttarakhand, a cloudburst in Uttarkashi this June buried a hotel construction site, killing two labourers and leaving seven missing in cascading debris, suspending the Chardham Yatra route. In Himachal Pradesh, from June 20 to July 31, the state recorded over 25 cloudbursts, 42 flash floods, and 32 landslides, killing 82 people, with 82 missing.
Yet, despite these stark geological warnings, we continue to recklessly pressurise the Himalayas with ill-conceived mega dam projects, visionless tourism infrastructure, and haphazard urban expansion. Fragile mountain slopes are being carved out for luxury resorts, widened highways, and concrete homestays, often without environmental assessments. The result: unstable terrain, severed ecological balance, and communities increasingly exposed to disaster.
Our book Earthquake Hazard and Large Dams in the Himalayas examines how these high-risk dams are not just engineering blunders; they're potential catalysts for disaster in a zone already teetering on the edge.
A critical read for anyone who cares about the Himalayan ecosystem, its people, and our shared future.

This , let’s celebrate an increasing roar at Kaziranga.

The Kaziranga Tiger Reserve now ranks third worldwide in tiger density, with an impressive 18.65 tigers per 100 sq km, according to its first large-scale population survey.

Kaziranga’s success is not just about numbers—it's a reflection of what’s possible when nature is allowed to heal.

Here's to the forests that shelter, and the tigers that remind us why they must be protected. And to what all can be possible under excellent leadership and a good team of dedicated officers.

“A Sailor by Providence is not a book to be read as a book; it is NOSTALGIA for those who have known Bhim and Kiran in part, or have had a long association with this remarkable couple. For all others, it’s a fascinating and factual account of the author’s 78 years’ journey (age 7 to 85). It is a reflection of the myriad encounters that took place in his and Kiran’s lives; as well as the lessons learnt along the way that have indeed made him what he is today.”

- Rear Admiral D.N. Thukral (Retd)

“I have known Commodore BS Uppal since 1971, and had always respected him as a gentleman and professional submariner. After reading this book, I am truly impressed by the enormous, unknown hurdles he overcame in his childhood, to join the Indian Navy as a sailor in 1954, then becoming an officer in 1962, followed by 18 months of pioneering submarine training in the USSR in 1967, a successful submarine command, retiring as a Commodore in 1992, settling down in USA, yet keeping in touch with his roots in India, it’s Navy and his beloved Submarine Arm. Aptly titled A Sailor by Providence, this book is a must read for all seafarers.
It’s a book waiting to become a biopic.”

former FOC-in-C, Eastern Naval Command

Natraj had the honour to publish the autobiography of Commodore Uppal in 2024. It was launched in December 2025 on Navy Day. Today we have lost a superlative human being who will be fondly remembered by family and friends.

Commodore Uppal joined the Indian Navy as a young boy in 1954, embarking on a distinguished career that spanned 38 years. He spent his first eight years in the lower deck as a communication sailor (Signalman) before transitioning to the officer ranks, where he served for the next 30 years. Cmde. Uppal volunteered for the elite submarine service and was part of the second group of officers trained in the Soviet Union. He served as the navigating officer and executive officer aboard INS Kalvari and later commanded INS Vagir. He became the Commander Submarine of the 9th Submarine Squadron.
Cmde. Uppal’s leadership continued as the commanding officer of INS Virbahu, after which he was appointed Director of the Submarine Arm (DSA) and Director of Submarine Operations (DSMO) from 1984 to 1989. During this pivotal period, the submarine arm saw significant growth, with the induction of German SSKs, Russian EKMs, and the nuclear submarine INS Chakra. His other notable assignments included commanding INS Venduruthy and serving as Naval Officer- in-Charge, Cochin (Kochi), from 1989 to 1991.

For his service, Cmde. Uppal was awarded the Nau Sena Medal (NM) and the Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM). He retired in 1992, after nearly four decades of service to his country. Cmde. Uppal lived near Washington, D.C., with his wife, son, daughter-in-law, and two granddaughters.

“When his father refused to let him continue his post-Matriculation studies 15-year-old Bhim Uppal fled to Delhi on his bicycle, and survived by washing dishes in an eatery and working for a sign painter. This early sign of his determination to better himself was to be reflected throughout his unique career rise from an OSig (ordinary signalman) to a Commodore heading the Indian Navy’s Directorate of Submarine Operations. A Sailor by Providence is aptly named. While it is essentially a personal narrative, it also provides interesting glimpses of the Indian Navy’s history and development. The author writes in a simple and sincere style without harping on his achievements, of which there were many; this to a large extent reflects the author’s personality. He gratefully describes the turns of Providence that set him on the course to success, and generously acknowledges the guidance and support that others have given him along the way.”

My India by Jim Corbett

We believe that books are bridges, not just between reader and writer, but between generations, places, and lives that history may have otherwise left behind.

My India, by Jim Corbett, is one such bridge. Known for his work in wildlife conservation, in My India, Corbett turns here to the people from every day, like the farmers, forest guards, village elders, and labourers. In his words, those “simple and hardworking souls” who shaped his world and whom he deeply admired.

Set in the Himalayan foothills during a time of great political upheaval, these portraits are marked by humility, love, and reverence. Corbett doesn’t just recount their lives; he preserves them, making them unforgettable.

By publishing such works, we honour the quiet resilience of everyday lives and reinforce our commitment to stories rooted in memory, respect, and the interconnectedness of people and place.

It is often in these humble, wild, and human encounters that a deeper conservation ethic is born, not from abstract ideals, but from living closely with the land, its forests, wildlife, and those who depend on them. My India reminds us that the seeds of ecological sensitivity are often sown through empathy, for both people and the places they call home.

We publish not just to remember, but to keep remembering—together.

Raatein Jungle Mein: Kisse Corbett Ke by Nilamber Kaushik

Raatein Jungle Mein: Kisse Corbett Ke takes readers into the heart of Corbett National Park—not during the day’s safaris, but after the sun sets, when the forest breathes differently. Through vivid tales of man-eaters, forest rest houses, and timeless jungle lore, this book reveals a side of the wilderness rarely seen.

These aren’t just stories of thrill and fear, they are lived experiences that awaken awe, respect, and humility in the presence of wild nature.

By publishing such works, we honour not only the mystery and magnificence of the jungle but also our belief that conservation begins with connection. The more intimately we know a forest, its stories, its silences, its people, the more deeply we feel compelled to protect it.

Books like this don’t just tell stories. They create stewards of memory, landscape, and legacy.

On Jim Corbett’s Trail and Other Tales from the Jungle, by Dr. A.J.T. Johnsingh

At Natraj, we believe that books can awaken reverence for the forests, for the creatures within them, and for the quiet, interconnected systems that keep our planet alive.
On Jim Corbett’s Trail and Other Tales from the Jungle, by Dr. A.J.T. Johnsingh, is more than just a collection of jungle stories — it's a call to witness, respect, and protect the wilderness we often take for granted. Through the eyes of a scientist who spent decades walking India’s wild spaces, this book reveals the beauty and fragility of and the urgency to protect our natural world.

We choose to publish books that nurture long-term thinking; we believe that storytelling is a powerful way to nurture a culture of care for landscapes, species, and the fragile ecosystems we are all part of.

When we share stories like this, it’s our way of contributing to an ecological culture—one built on respect, curiosity, and continuity.

Let’s walk the trail together.
