Two major developmental and ecological milestones recently achieved in Ladakh, transforming regions previously considered barren into hubs of sustainable energy and productivity
1. India's Deepest Geothermal Well
The Achievement: ONGC has successfully drilled India's deepest geothermal well, reaching a depth of 1,000 meters in the Puga Valley of Ladakh
Technical Feasibility: Operating at an altitude of over 4,400
meters in extreme sub-zero conditions, engineers tapped into natural geothermal energy sources. By reaching high-temperature steam and boiling water from deep within the earth, the project aims to fuel India's first-ever geothermal pilot power plant
Significance: This breakthrough allows for the use of natural steam to drive turbines, providing a continuous, sustainable, and reliable source of clean electricity, strengthening India's energy security
2. Ecological Restoration Project
The Initiative: Beyond energy, the region is witnessing a massive environmental transformation. An ambitious ecological restoration project has been launched to reclaim 800 acres of long-barren land
Methodology: By utilizing simple and cost-effective freshwater engineering-specifically through the restoration and diversion of water from the Igoo-Phey canal-the project aims to wash out salts from the soil and stimulate the growth of native grasses and vegetation
Impact: This effort serves to convert arid, unproductive land into fertile ground, effectively supporting local agriculture and fodder needs for livestock, thereby fostering a greener Ladakh
