यह प्राचीन भारतीय राज्य वत्स की राजधानी थी, जो सोलह महाजनपदों में से एक था। महाभारत के अनुसार, बाढ़ के कारण पुरानी राजधानी हस्तिनापुर के नष्ट हो जाने के बाद कुरु साम्राज्य की राजधानी कौशांबी में स्थानांतरित कर दी गई थी।
