Gulzar's Poetic Debut

In 1963, Bimal Roy and S.D. Burman debated a crucial scene in Bandini. How could a young woman in 1930s Bengal express her love without defying societal norms? A debutant lyricist, Sampooran Singh Kalra-now known as Gulzar-offered a poetic solution. His words, "Mora Gora Ang Laile," marked the beginning of an extraordinary journey in Hindi cinema.

What is a Ghazal?
A ghazal is more than just soulful poetry, it’s a unique form where every couplet (Sher) stands complete on its own, yet together they weave a larger mood. From the Matla that introduces the rhyme and refrain, to the Makta where poets like Ghalib left their personal signature, the ghazal follows a delicate structure of Radif and Qafiya. But its beauty is not confined to the east. Germany’s Goethe once drew inspiration from Persian ghazals, and in India, composers like S.D. Burman gave it a modern twist, turning verses into unforgettable melodies. The ghazal is timeless, adapting yet never losing its soul.

Mukhda, Antara &..... Sanchari? Re-discovering a long-lost art.

Most Hindi film songs follow a familiar structure: the Mukhda (main refrain) and the Antaras (verses). But there’s a lesser-known, rarely used section called the Sanchari — a melodic detour that stands apart from both.

Unlike the Antara, which usually repeats its tune with different lyrics, the Sanchari introduces a fresh melody altogether — often more reflective or dramatic — before returning to the main theme. Think of it as an unexpected island in a sea of familiar waters.

This structure came into Hindi film music largely through Bengali composers, who borrowed it from classical traditions. However, the first notable use by a non-Bengali composer was by O.P. Nayyar in the song “Lakhon Hai Nigahon Mein”. The Sanchari in that song is a rare gem — distinctly different in tune and emotion.

Today, the Sanchari has all but vanished from mainstream music, making its rare appearances a delight for the keen listener. It’s a reminder of a time when composers crafted songs not just to please, but to surprise.
