HERBS THAT HEAL: Natural Remedies for Good Health

The Magic
Herbs act in almost magical and astonishing ways — spasms may relax, pains vanish, constipation overcome, nervousness recede, headaches disappear, colds be banished, allergies counteracted, fevers controlled, blood flow arrested... the magic is endless.

The Heritage
Since early Neanderthal man, plants and herbs have been used for healing and restoring good health. Even as medical science has progressed, methods and ideas based on herbal healing have sustained and grown in different countries, across different cultures, often being used in exactly the same way. Bitter chamomile, for instance, is used as digestive aid throughout the world.

The Proof
Traditional herbal remedies have led to the development of numerous ‘modern' drugs; from aspirin, tranquilizers and chywanprash to heart saving digitalis, establishing beyond doubt the efficacy of 'herbal medicine'.

The Book
This revised 2nd edition covers more than one hundred herbs, most of which are readily available (some even in your kitchen) and easily obtainable, and describes their specific healing properties, how the herb is useful in alleviating or preventing specific ailments; in most cases, the method of making and using herbal preparations is also explained. Index of ailments which can be effectively treated by herbs makes the book especially useful.

Asthma: The sudden and widespread narrowing of the airways (the bronchi) that carry air into the lungs. When this narrowing occurs, it becomes difficult to draw air into the lungs and breathe it out again.

** Importance of Diet in Managing and Treating Asthma **

Balanced, nutritious diet at regular intervals is important for asthmatics. Not only does it help in preventing an asthma attack but also minimised the severity of an attack.

* Diet should be light and easy to digest.
* A diet consisting of moderate quantity of vegetable, soups, cheese, eggs, chicken and fruit is recommended.
* Home-made food scores over outside food which tends to be cooked with excessive amounts of fat.
* Avoid: Bananas, ladyfiners (okra) and 'urad dal' can cause discomfort in asthmatics.
* Minimise use of spices.

** Recommended Food **
Fruits: Fruits with high content of Vit. C and E like kiwi, oranges etc reduce the lung swelling and inflammation.
Green leafy Vegetables: Fresh vegetables make a good diet for asthma patients. They are vitamin and flavonoid dense and destroy free radicals in the body.
Vitamin D: People with asthma usually have low Vit. D levels; milk, eggs, fish must form a regular part of daily diet. Spending time under the sun for a few minutes can increase the level of Vit. D.

** Foods to Avoid **
Reduce salt intake.
Monosodium glutamate (MSG) - This is found in plenty in chinese food and also in packaged and processed foods. MSG is a recognised asthma trigger.
Sulphites - Found in wine, dried foods, pickles, frozen shrimps and even fresh shrimps. These should be avoided.

** In General **
Avoid:
Overloading the stomach.
Fried, fatty foods
Desserts at night
Smoking
Drinking

Instead:
Take light, nourishing food.
Eat at regular intervals
Take dinner 2 hours before sleep to digest fully.

With winters approaching in India, every year, air pollution in and around Delhi climbs to levels around nine times more than what the WHO considers safe, as a thick blanket of smog - fed by agriculture fires and festive fireworks - engulfs the city.

Based on results of latest in medical science the authors have synthesised complex information and demystified it into practical, usable action points to prevent and control asthma and all other forms of allergies, including recognising and managing triggers, monitoring airflows, medical facts about how and why of steroids and allergy shots, food sensitivities and much more.

Thomas Edison was afraid of the dark!!

Yes! Edison was afraid of the dark — yet he overcame that obstacle in a big way and invented the light bulb. The door to opportunity swings on the hinges of adversity.

**Problems are the price of progress.

The obstacles of life are intended to make us better, not bitter. Obstacles are merely a call to strengthen, not quit.

If you like problems, you will succeed. The biggest successes are the people who solve the biggest problems.

Don't let your problems take the lead — you take it!!

The difficulty you face is simply an opportunity for you to do your best.

**The breakfast of champions is not cereal; It is obstacles.

'I've missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times I've been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I have failed over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.' — Michael Jordon

Don't spend half your life telling what you are going to do and the other half explaining why you didn't do it. An alibi is the supposed proof that you did do what you didn't do, so that others will think you didn't do what you did.

Mistakes have hidden powers to help us, but they fail in their mission of helping us when we blame them on other people. When you use excuses, you give up your power to change and improve.

If you find an excuse, don't pick it up. Find a way instead of looking for an alibi. Remember, when you make a mistake and then make an excuse for it, you have made two mistakes.

There may be many reasons for failure, but not a single excuse. People who really want to do something find their way; the others find an excuse.

Sept 29 is World Heart Day, and is celebrated to spread awareness about the importance of a healthy heart.

The best way to improve your overall health is through cardiovascular fitness.
The American Heart Association advises regular exercise as a positive measure for preventing cardiovascular disease. Studies at Stanford University School of Medicine have shown that those who exercise regularly are not only significantly less prone to heart attacks, but the effect of a heart attack is far less severe than on those who do not exercise regularly.

If you are concerned about losing a few kilos, improving muscle tone, lowering the chance of heart disease or just looking good, this book is a must read.

ARUN JOSHI (1939-1993), son of a botanist and eminent educationists, was born in Varanasi and educated in India and the U.S. He came back to India to pursue a career in corporate world and in writing. His five novels and a collection of short stories won him recognition as an author of rare sensitivity and exceptional talent.

𝒯𝒽𝑒 𝒜𝓅𝓅𝓇𝑒𝓃𝓉𝒾𝒸𝑒 is a novel totally different in tone from all other novels and writings of Arun Joshi. The protagonist, Ratan Rathor, represents the quintessence everyman — a contrast to other protagonists in so far as his intellectual level is much lower. An unsophisticated youth, jobless, he comes to the city in search of a career; unscrupulous and ready to pr******te himself for professional advancement.
According to World Literature Today, 'the novel is cast in a series of Browning-like monologues, to a boy to whom the protagonist, burdened with sorrow of 'a wasted life', lays bare the motives, aspirations, dilemmas and frustrations of his past.'

Risk of Asthma, Respiratory Illnesses

With the constant dip in mercury and air quality aggravating from moderate to poor to very poor category in the national capital and its surrounding areas, the hospitals in Delhi are getting flocked by patients of asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other acute respiratory illnesses. While the health experts have been witnessing an almost 20 per cent rise in the number of such patients for the last two weeks, the influx of patients with no prior respiratory illness are also increasing with symptoms of asthma.

Asthma is a reversible obstructive airways disease. It is a long term (chronic) inflammatory disease that leads to extra-sensitive and easily irritable airways when not treated properly.

Based on results of latest in medical science, and their combined experience, the authors have synthesised complex information and demystified it into practical, usable action points to prevent and control asthma and all other forms of allergies, including recognising and managing triggers, monitoring airflows, medical facts about how and why of steroids and allergy shots, food sensitivities and much more.

'A comprehensive and readily understandable book... the authors not only explain the nature of allergy problems but tell how a patient can learn what is causing the reaction... (this book is) a must for patients of chronic asthma.' — THE HINDU
